HANOVER, N.H. – Senior Sarah Parsons (Dover, Mass.) scored her fourth goal of the weekend, but Cornell scored two power play goals to dump the Dartmouth women's hockey, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon.
Dartmouth (6-10-2, 4-8-1 ECAC, 3-4-0 Ivy) also had assists given to junior Amanda Trunzo (Andover, Minn.) and freshman Camille Dumais (Beaconsfield, Que.). Senior Mariel Lacina (London, Ont.) got the start and made 25 saves in net for the Big Green in the loss.
Cornell (9-7-3, 8-1-3 ECAC, 5-0-1 Ivy) saw two of its goals scored by Chelsea Karpenko with one coming on the power play and she also assisted on the Big Red's first score of the evening. Laura Fortino netted a goal on the man advantage and posted an assist in the win. Amanda Mazzotta was stellar in net for Cornell with 25 saves and allowed just one goal in her ninth win of the season.
Cornell took a 1-0 lead midway through the opening frame on a power play goal from Fortino. Lauriane Rougeau was credited with one of the assists and did a great job holding the puck at the left point. She then found Fortino wide open at the opposite circle. As the pass was made, Lacina got caught up with a Dartmouth defender in front and couldn't make the transition from right to left and Fortino hit the open net.
Dartmouth had a great chance to even the score on its second power play of the night. Cornell had a defensive breakdown in its on zone and Trunzo went from behind the net to wide open on top of the crease, but Mazzotta cut down the angle and made the save.
The Big Red earned a tight 11-8 shot advantage in the period and the Big Green struggled with the extra skater as Dartmouth failed on three power play opportunities.
The second period was the Karpenko show for the Big Red as she netted two goals in the frame to push the lead to 3-0 in favor of Cornell. The first came during a 4-on-4 situation. Fortino was able to skate into the slot and fired a shot that Lacina stopped, but Karpenko was there for the rebound and didn't miss. Her second was on the power play and Karpenko made a strong moved from the right circle. She shielded the defender and lifted a backhand pass over Lacina, high to the glove side.
Dartmouth narrowed the lead to 3-1 on the power play as Parsons netted her 14th of the season and fourth of the weekend. It was a typical Dartmouth power play. Trunzo pushed the puck to Dumais at the top of the slot, she found Parsons above the left circle and she sniped a wrist shot that beat Mazzotta to the near post on the glove side.
The third period was uneventful for both sides as the shots were 8-4 in favor of Cornell. The Big Red finished 2-for-4 on the power play, while Dartmouth only managed one goal in six opportunities.
Dartmouth will be back in action next Friday night as the Big Green takes on Rensselaer in a rematch of last season's ECAC Hockey Tournament final. The game begins at 7 p.m. at Thompson Arena.
