HANOVER, N.H. — Freshman quarterback Cole Marcoux threw for 185 yards on just eight completions, including a 67-yard scoring strike to sophomore Jeremy Rick, plus ran for two more touchdowns to lead the Dartmouth junior varsity squad to a 24-7 victory over visiting Williams on Sunday afternoon at Blackman Field. The jayvees have won both of their games so far this fall by a combined score of 52-7.
Williams took an early lead thanks to a bad snap in the first quarter. On a third down from the Ephs 35, the snap sailed over Big Green quarterback Andy Gay, then bounded around as numerous players tried to corral the ball. Finally John McKenna scooped the ball up at the Dartmouth 20 and sprinted to the end zone for the score, and the point after made it a 7-0 game.
Dartmouth got on the board early in the second quarter when senior Matthew Kelly drilled a 31-yard field goal.
Just before the end of the half, Marcoux scored on a one-yard keeper, but not before converting a 4th-and-long with a 34-yard pass to freshman Dana Barbaro to the one.
Even though just 22 seconds remained in the half, Williams nearly scored again. Dartmouth kicked short to prevent a long return, but a personal foul and an offsides penalty against the Big Green gave the Ephs the ball at the Dartmouth 40. Quarterback Adam Marske got the Ephs inside the Big Green 10 with 34-yard toss to Richie Beaton. But with eight seconds on the clock, Marske scrambled out of the pocket and threw out of the end zone, allowing time to expire.
In the third quarter, Dartmouth tallied its final two touchdowns. Again Marcoux pushed forward for a one-yard score, thanks to a spinning second effort on 4th-and-goal to make it 17-7. On the very next possession, Marcoux found an open receiver beyond the defense in Rick, who outran the oncoming defenders to close the scoring.
Marcoux finished the day 8-of-23 passing for his 185 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Gay played most of the first half, connecting on 7-of-16 for 78 yards with one interception. Barbaro led the Big Green receivers with five catches for 90 yards, while freshman tight end Dean Bakes hauled in four passes for 69 yards.
While Dartmouth had just 56 total rushing yards, the 45-yard loss on the bad snap skews that number. Freshman John Higgins ran for 55 yards on 16 carries while sophomore Jason Lawrence had 42 on 10 rushes, including a 27-yard jaunt in the fourth quarter.
The defense was stellar for Dartmouth as Williams managed just 152 yards of offense and six first downs. Freshman linebacker Hunter Foraker led the squad with six tackles and broke up a pass, while fellow freshman Ethan Posey had five stops with two going for a loss including a half sack. Both freshman Steve Stafford and junior Bruno Vetter had sacks as well, while sophomore Tom Patek and freshmen Jimmy Johnson and Clay Robbins each picked off a pass.
Williams completed just 9-of-30 passes on the afternoon for 96 yards, and had 56 yards on the ground on 23 rushes.
Kelly provided a big leg on six punts, averaging 45.5 yards including a 65-yarder down to the two-yard line.
The next game for the junior varsity will be against the Harvard jayvees on Friday, Oct. 29 at Memorial Field at 1 p.m.
