HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth women's volleyball team lost to Penn on Saturday, 3-1. It marked the final game of the season for the Big Green. The squad finished 14-11 overall and 5-9 in the Ivy League. The Quakers improved to 15-10 overall and 11-2 in the conference.
The Quakers didn't officially win the contest until they won the fourth set, but it was the third that proved to be the difference in the contest. The two squads entered the third set tied 1-1 in the match, splitting the first two. The teams played close in the third with Dartmouth holding a 23-22 late.
Freshman Elisa Scudder (Ashburn, Va.) recorded a kill to give the Big Green two set points. Penn responded with a kill by Julia Swanson and then forced senior Kelsey Johnson (Carlsbad, Calif.) into an attack error to tie the set at 24. After another attack error, the Quakers gained set point at 25-24. Freshman Meghan Cooney (Martinez, Calif.) ripped a kill down the line to even the score. After a service error by Scudder, Cooney again tied the set, this time at 26, with another kill. After the second Cooney kill, the Quakers had seen enough. Lauren Martin recorded a kill, and Megan Tryon and Amanda Pacheco blocked a Cooney attack to win the set.
Penn used all of the momentum from the third set to cruise to a 25-15 win in the fourth. The first two sets were mirror images of each other with the Quakers seperating themsevles late in the first to win, 25-20, and Dartmouth doing the same in the second to win, 25-20.
The contest marked the final contests for the Big Green's two seniors, Jessie Hartman (Woodside, Calif.) and Johnson. Hartman recorded seven digs and two assists in the match, and Johnson had nine kills and 16 digs. Juniors Madeline Baird (Austin, Texas) and Annie Villanueva (Santa Barbara, Calif.) led the team with 11 kills each. Junior Amber Bryant led all players in digs with 18.
