DURHAM, N.H. — Playing at in-state rival New Hampshire on Saturday, the Dartmouth women's hockey team failed to score in a 1-0 loss. UNH turned back 28 shots and scored a late third period goal to secure the victory. The loss dropped Dartmouth to 6-5-0 on the season. The Wildcats improved to 9-10-0.
The two teams were scoreless through the first two periods and for the first 13 minutes of the third. The Wildcats scored the game-winning goal with just over six minutes remaining in the game. Nicole Gifford recorded her third goal of the season off of assists from Kailey Chappell and Courtney Sheary. Despite pulling their goalie, the Big Green could not find the equalizer in the final minutes.
Sophomore Whitney Woodcox (Oshawa, Ont.) made the start for Dartmouth in net, making 16 saves. Both teams committed six penalties, which totaled 12 penalty minutes. Dartmouth put 28 shots on goal compared to only 17 by the Wildcats, but the Big Green couldn't find a way to score on goaltender Lindsey Minton.
The shutout was the first the Big Green suffered this season, and marked the first time Dartmouth has played a game without scoring a goal since losing, 3-0 at Cornell on Oct. 30, 2009. The contest also marked the fourth consecutive loss for the Big Green. The last win for the team came on Nov. 16 at home against Providence.
The team will take a couple weeks off before it plays its next game at Vermont on Dec. 29 at 5 p.m.
