HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth men's soccer team took a 1-0 loss to visiting Stony Brook this afternoon in the final game of the 2010 Dartmouth Classic Tournament.
Dartmouth (2-1) suffered its first loss of the season at the hands of Stony Brook (2-4), despite holding steep advantages in both shots, 11-3 and corner kicks, 10-3. A red card delivered in the 22nd minute saw the Big Green's lineup reduced to 10 players from that point on.
The Big Green started the game with an offensive flurry, earning three corner kicks in the first eight minutes. The best opportunity came on the third, when Lucky Mkosana (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe) had the Stony Brook keeper, Stefan Manz, off his line and fired but Manz managed to block it. Mkosana chased down the rebound and crossed the ball the Andrew Olsen (Norwell, Mass.) who had his shot blocked by a defender.
Stony Brook's first real chance came in the 23rd minute with a free kick just outside the box, but the Big Green's defensive wall came up with a block. Ten minutes later the Seawolves converted with a beautiful goal to take the 1-0 lead in the 34th minute. Berian Gobeil beat a Sean Donovan (Burr Ridge, Ill.) with a diving header in the box off a cross from Kyle Schlesinger.
For the balance of the first half it was mostly a midfield battle with neither side getting too much offense going. Each team took just two shots in the half.
Dartmouth battled for the entire 45 minutes in the second half, outshooting Stony Brook 9-1 despite being a man down. Aaron Gaide (Avon, Conn.) had a good scoring opportunity in the 52nd minute off a cross from Mkosana but was pushed off the ball. The Big Green continued to force scrambles with near misses in the box off a host of corner kicks and dangerously long throw-ins by Walker Linares (Santa Cruz, Calif.).
The Seawolves lone chance to score in the second was a close call when Antonio Crespi brokeaway down the right sight and fired by Donovan made a diving stop. Much of Dartmouth's offense continued to come from set pieces including a sequence off a corner kick with eight minutes to play. Bryan Giudicelli (Emerald Hills, Calif.) headed the ball towards the goal with Stony Brook's Manz beat, but a defender saved it on the line, heading the ball out.
Despite a flurry of offensive activity in the final five minutes Dartmouth was unable to get the equalizer and Stony Brook held on for the win in a very physical contest.
Holy Cross won the Dartmouth Classic Tournament after defeating Stony Brook and tying San Diego today.
The Dartmouth men are on the road next weekend at the Bradley University Tournament, starting off against the host Braves at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 17.
