Peoria, Ill. - Sean Donovan (Burr Ridge, Ill.) made eight saves to keep Dartmouth alive but the Big Green dropped a 3-2 overtime decision to #14 Creighton at Bradley University today.
Creighton's (5-1) Jose Gomez scored the golden goal in the 97th minute off a close-range header to spoil Dartmouth's (3-2) upset bid. Overall, the Blue Jays had outshot Dartmouth, 20-11 and put 11 shots on goal to the Green's three. It was a very physical game in which the teams combined for 33 fouls and Dartmouth found itself down to 10 men from the 71st minute on. Creighton picked up two yellow cards as well, one of which led directly to a Dartmouth goal.
Dartmouth finished third at the Hotels at Grand Prairie Classic. Senior Bryan Giudicelli (Emerald Hills, Calif.) and freshman Colin Skelly (Wrightstown, Pa.) were named to the all-tournament team.
The Blue Jays struck first with a goal in just the third minute of play when Ethan Finlay fired in a goal off a rebound from a shot by Kris Clark that hit the post to go up 1-0.
Dartmouth answered back with the equalizer in the 26th minute of play, capitalizing on a free kick opportunity. Sophomore Kevin Dzierzawski (Oakland Twp., Mich.) took the free kick and Giudicelli was in the box to tap the ball in for the 1-1 tie.
The teams entered halftime tied, 1-1, after Creighton had taken a 9-5 lead in shots and Donovan had made five saves.
Creighton took a 2-1 lead in the 63rd minute when Greg Jordan scored on a header off a corner kick by Josh Moran. The Big Green saw the game tied at 2-2 less than a minute later when a Creighton defender misplayed a clearance, resulting in an own goal.
The game remained tied through regulation and headed to overtime - already Dartmouth's second of the season. Seven minutes into it, Gomez headed in a cross from Dion Acoff to win the game for the Blue Jays.
Playing in his home state, Donovan's eight save performance was a career-best.
Dartmouth plays another nationally-competitive opponent this coming weekend when it hosts New Mexico at Burnham Field at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 25.
