Women's Hockey Falls to UNH in Overtime, 5-4

HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth women's hockey team lost its home opener on Sunday to New Hampshire, 5-4, in overtime at Thompson Arena. The loss dropped the Big Green to 1-2-1 and the Wildcats improved to 4-4-2.

Dartmouth held leads of 3-1 and 4-3, but every time the team took a lead UNH found the equalizer. With the Big Green leading, 4-3, and under five minutes remaining in the third period, the Wildcats' Heather Kashman dumped the puck behind the Dartmouth net. Kayla Mork retrieved the pass, skated behind the net and then beat a sliding Katie Milligan (Kingston, Ontario) for the tying goal.

Neither team scored with the clock ticking down in the third, which forced Dartmouth into its second overtime game of the season. New Hampshire controlled the extra frame, taking six shots on goal compared to none for the Big Green. Late in the overtime and with UNH on the attack, the Wildcats again had the puck behind the Dartmouth net. Mork found Emma Clark on the left side of the crease, and the senior slipped the puck between Milligan and the pipe for the game winner. It marked Clark's third goal of the season and second of the contest.

New Hampshire took the first lead of the game 10 minutes into the first on a goal by Jenna Lascelle. Dartmouth registered the next three scores, including two in the first period. The first came with 3:48 left in the opening frame with junior Sasha Nanji (Markham, Ontario) beating the goalie 1-on-1 with an assist from senior Reagan Fischer (Irma, Alberta).

Dartmouth took a one-goal lead into the first intermission after senior Kelly Foley (South Boston, Mass.) netted her third goal of the year with 30 seconds left in the opening frame. After receiving a pass from Fischer, Foley took two strides toward the far circle and then beat Jenn Gilligan to the top-left section of the net.

The Big Green extended their lead to 3-1, with six minutes left in the second period on junior Sally Komarek's (Minneapolis, Minn.) first goal of the season. Komarek received a pass from freshman Morgan Illikainen (Grand Rapids, Minn.) in front of the net and jammed the puck into the net. It was the first career assist and point for Illikainen.

The Wildcats tied the game, 3-3, 10 minutes into the third period on Clark's first goal of the game. Foley added her second goal of the game, and fourth of the season just over a minute later off an assist from junior Camille Dumais (Beaconsfield, Que.).

Both teams recorded a power-play goal with Dartmouth going 1-for-5 and New Hampshire finishing 1-for-2. Gilligan finished the game with 16 saves, while Milligan made 24 in her first collegiate start. The Wildcats took 29 shots in the contest compared to 20 for the Big Green.

Dartmouth heads back on the road next weekend when it travels to second-ranked Cornell and Colgate.
