HANOVER, N.H. — The 75th-ranked Dartmouth women's tennis team defeated Penn, 5-2, on Sunday at the Boss Tennis Center to remain
undefeated in the Ivy League. The Big Green won the doubles point and
got singles wins from senior tri-captains Ryan Reichel (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) and Georgiana Smyser (Houston, Texas) and sophomores Sarah Leonard (Norwalk, Conn.) and Christina Danosi (New Albany, Ohio). The Big Green improved to 12-7 overall and 4-0 in the Ivy League, while the Quakers fell to 6-12 overall and 0-4 in the conference.
Dartmouth took the doubles point, 2-1, thanks to wins from the teams of
Smyser and Reichel at second doubles and Danosi and fellow sophomore Jeri Reichel (Hilton Head Island, S.C.), who pulled out a 9-7 thriller at third doubles. Senior tri-captain
Molly Scott (Trabuco Cyn, Calif.) and freshman Melissa Matsuoka (Newport Beach, Calif.) fell 8-4 at No. 1 doubles to
Connie Hsu and Alexa Ely, who are 11-1 in 2011 matches and undefeated in
Ivy League play.
In singles, Danosi put the first singles point on the board for the Big
Green with a resounding 6-0, 6-2 win against junior Daniela DePaoli at sixth singles. Smyser quickly followed with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over freshman
Lauren Bridges at No. 5. Leonard clinched the match for Dartmouth with a 6-2, 6-3 victory at second singles over freshman Jaime Yapp-Shing.
Ryan Reichel notched a fifth point for Dartmouth with a 7-6, 6-3 victory at
No. 4 against freshman Stephanie Do.
Scott was defeated in straight sets
at first singles by Quaker freshman Hsu, the country's 23rd-ranked player who
also has a WTA pro singles and doubles ranking. Hsu is 17-0 in spring
dual matches, has won 41 singles matches during the 2010-11 season, and
won the ITA Northeast Regional Singles Championship in October. Matsuoka
split sets at third singles with Alexa Ely, and played a third set
super-breaker since the match was already decided. The freshman ended
up falling to the Quaker senior 10-7 in the super-breaker.
