HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth women's hockey team played for the first time in 23 days and defeated Vermont on Tuesday, 5-2, for its second home victory of the season. The win improved the Big Green to 7-5-1 and the loss dropped the Catamounts to 3-11-6.
Vermont got on the board first when Erin Wente jammed in a rebound off a shot by Breanne Sundquist 7:50 into the first period. The Catamounts would hold on to the lead for only five minutes with the Big Green using a freshmen connection to tie the score. Abbie Lund (Eden Prairie, Minn.) had the puck behind the net on the near side, and slid a pass across the front of the crease to a streaking Samantha Zeiss (Stamford, Conn.). Zeiss quickly redirected the shot into the back of the net for her first collegiate goal in her 13th career game. It marked the first point for Lund with the assist.
The Big Green took the lead five minutes later with 1:44 left in the first, despite being down a skater. After senior Reagan Fischer (Irma, Alberta) committed a tripping penalty, Vermont had the advantage, but Dartmouth ended up scoring a goal. Junior Camille Dumais (Beaconsfield, Quebec) controlled the puck in front of the Dartmouth bench and fired a pass to sophomore Ali Winkel (Espanola, Ontario) who had slipped behind the Catamount defense and then beat the Vermont goaltender, Roxanne Douville, low and to the right. It marked the fourth goal of the season for forward and the first short-handed goal for the team this season.
Just 30 seconds later, the Big Green repeated the play with junior Lisa Berreman (Eagan, Minn.) passing the puck up to Fischer who beat Douville one-on-one by slipping it past the sophomore on the right side. The goal gave Dartmouth a 3-1 lead heading into the first intermission.
Neither team scored early in the second period before the Catamounts switched out Doubille for junior Kelci Lanthier midway through the stanza. The strategy seemed to be working when Vermont's Delia McNally cut the advantage to 3-2 with 8:25 left in the second on a shot from three strides inside the blue line.
Dartmouth responded with time winding down in the period when senior Jenna Hobeika (Alpine, N.J.) tallied her fourth goal of the season. Hobeika received the puck on the far side of the net on a quick pass behind the goal by Dumais. Hobieka stuffed the quick pass between Lanthier and the far post. The teams headed into the third with Dartmouth leading, 4-2. The Big Green concluded their scoring when Dumais scored an empty-net goal with 1:41 remaining in the contest.
Freshman Katie Milligan (Kingston, Ontario) earned her second career victory, making 16 saves. Dartmouth peppered the Catamount goaltenders with 37 shots, while Vermont only took 18. The Catamounts committed seven penalties with the Big Green totaling six.
Dartmouth next travels to Quinnipiac and Princeton this weekend in conference action.
