HANOVER, N.H.- Dartmouth College is participating in the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators (NACWAA) Title IX Trailblazer Tribute Video Contest and has prepared a video tribute on the career of former athletic director, Josie Harper.
The contest is in conjunction with the 40th Anniversary of Title IX. The video with the most unique views from April 9- 23 will earn a $9,000 gift from the NACWAA Foundation Fund in support of its women's athletics program and/or female staff development. Fans can view Dartmouth's video tribute to Harper at this link.
Harper, Dartmouth's Director of Athletics from 2002-09, was the first woman to be named an athletics director in the Ivy League. Prior to her appointment as athletics director, she served as an assistant and associate athletics director from 1990-2002.
Harper coached the Dartmouth women's lacrosse team for 11 years. She led the Big Green to a 88-69 record, including back-to-back Ivy League championships in 1986 and 1987. Under Harper's tutelage, Dartmouth advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 1983 and won an ECAC Championship in 1988.
Harper was also involved with the U.S. women's lacrosse team. She coached the U.S. World Cup team in 1986, and in 1982 was an assistant for the U.S. squad that captured the World Championship in England. For her efforts, Harper was inducted into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2006, and is also a member of the New England Lacrosse Hall of Fame and the Pennsylvania Lacrosse Hall of Fame.
In 2005, Harper received the ECAC's Katherine Ley Award, recognizing her leadership and advocacy for women's coaches and administrators. She was named ECAC Administrator of the Year in 2001 and was NACWAA Division I-AA Administrator of the Year in 2000.
The two videos receiving the most views will be shown at the 2012 NACWAA National Convention Oct. 7-10 in Kansas City. Representatives from the winning institution and its trailblazer will be invited to attend and be recognized at a commemoration event at the National Convention.
