PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Dartmouth women's basketball team utilized a 12-3 run and went 8-of-9 from the free throw line in the final 1:40 to seal a 49-41 road win at Brown on Friday (Feb. 2). The win is the second consecutive for the Big Green and gives the Dartmouth (4-13, 2-1 Ivy League) back-to-back road wins against Brown.
With the Bears leading 38-35 with 6:24 remaining, Milica Toskovic (Santa Monica, Calif.) completed an old-fashioned three-point play to tie the game at 38-38, which sparked the Big Green's run to seal the victory.
Co-captains, Nicola Zimmer (Chevy Chase, Md.) and Faziah Steen (Detroit, Mich.) led the Dartmouth offense with 11 points each while Tia Dawson (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds for her fifth game with double-figure rebounds.
Out of the halftime break, Brown made things interesting by scoring the first two baskets, which cut the Big Green lead to one point, 24-23, with just two minutes off the game clock.
A jumper from Sheila Dixon gave the Bears their first lead of the game, 30-29, and sparked a 8-0 run that pushed the Bears lead to seven points, 36-29 with 11:32 on the game clock. From that point, the teams traded buckets until the final minutes as the Big Green sealed the win.
Dartmouth shot 42.5 percent (17-of-40) while also outrebounding the Bears (7-10, 1-2 Ivy League) 35-31.
The bench played an important role, outscoring Brown's bench, 16-5. Lakin Roland (Jeffersonville, Ind.) had eight points off the bench to lead the Big Green reserves. Dartmouth also won the battle of the paint, 22-20, and posted 15 points off of Brown turnovers.
The Big Green opened the game strong and jumped out to a 9-0 lead behind a triple from Steen on the first possession of the game. The Dartmouth defense kept the Bears rattled through the opening moments as they went 0-8 from the field through the first eight minutes of the game.
Zimmer, fresh off her 18-point performance against Harvard, kept her hot shooting touch and added six first-half points to lead the Big Green.
A layup from Dixon gave the Bears their first field goal at the13: 24 mark and with several quick buckets, the Bears were able to cut the Dartmouth lead to 14-9, but the Big Green responded with a 7-0 run to take a 20-9 lead at the 5:56 mark. The Bears closed the half on a 10-2 run to cut the Dartmouth lead to just three points, 22-19, at the halftime break.
The Big Green concludes the weekend tomorrow (Feb. 2) when they head to New Haven, Conn., to take on Yale. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. at Lee Amphitheater.
