HANOVER, N.H. — The Ivy League announced its weekly football award winners today, and Dartmouth nickelback Frankie Hernandez received the Defensive Player of the Week honor. This is the second weekly award for Hernandez this fall and the fifth for a Big Green football player — one following each game to date.
A 5-9, 195-pound junior from Miami, Florida, Hernandez contributed eight tackles to the defensive effort that allowed Dartmouth to hold off Holy Cross in a 24-21 homecoming victory on Saturday. But his biggest play came during the second quarter with the score tied at three shortly after a Big Green turnover when he picked off a Crusader pass to swing momentum back Dartmouth's way. The Green would go on to take a 10-6 lead into halftime and never trailed in picking up their third consecutive win.
Hernandez also took home the honor two weeks ago after a 31-13 victory over Penn. Other Big Green players to be named an Ivy Player of the Week this fall are junior quarterback Dalyn Williams (co-Offense) after the season opener, senior kick returner Kirby Schoenthaler (Special Teams) after week two, and senior wide receiver Ryan McManus (Offense) following a 38-31 win at Yale last week.
Dartmouth has had at least one player recognized by the Ivy League as a weekly award winner for seven straight weeks dating back to last season.
Getting a mention on the Honor Roll this week was junior running back Kyle Bramble, who recorded his third career 100-yard rushing game with a career-high 113 on 23 carries, plus hauled in a seven-yard touchdown reception.
Dartmouth (4-1, 2-0 Ivy) travel to New York City this weekend when it plays at Columbia (0-5, 0-2) in the Lions' homecoming game. Columbia is currently on a 16-game slide that dates back to the 2012 season, and last year the Big Green came away with a 56-0 triumph in Hanover. Dartmouth fans can watch the game live by subscribing to Big Green Insider on the Ivy League Digital Network (ILDN), and free audio is available on the ILDN with Dick Lutsk and Wayne Young calling the action on 99Rock, WFRD 99.3 FM in Hanover.
