HANOVER, N.H. — The Ivy League announced its weekly football award winners today, and Dartmouth nickelback Frankie Hernandez received the Defensive Player of the Week honor. This is the first weekly award for Hernandez and the third for a Big Green football player this fall — one after each game thus far.
A junior from Miami, Florida, Hernandez was at the forefront of the Dartmouth defense that limited Penn to just 13 points on Saturday at Memorial Field as the Big Green stormed to a 31-13 triumph to open their Ivy League campaign. Among Hernandez' 11 tackles (that tied for game-high honors) was one for a three-yard loss, but his biggest play came in the second quarter when he recovered a Quaker fumble at the Penn 42, setting up the third Dartmouth touchdown of the afternoon. Hernandez also broke up a pair of passes, including a fourth-down attempt late in the fourth quarter that ended any chance of Penn pulling off a miraculous comeback.
Other Big Green players to be named an Ivy Player of the Week this fall are junior quarterback Dalyn Williams as the co-Offensive Player after the season opener, and senior kick returner Kirby Schoenthaler as the Special Team Player last week. Hernandez is the first Dartmouth player to earn the Defensive Player award since Michael Runger '14 took home the honor each of the final two weeks of the 2013 season.
Getting a mention on the Honor Roll for the week were junior quarterback Dalyn Williams, who set a career high by running for three touchdowns, and junior running back Kyle Bramble thanks to his second career 100-yard rushing game (22 carries, 104 yards, 1 TD).
Dartmouth (2-1, 1-0 Ivy) gets a big test this Saturday when it plays at offensive powerhouse Yale (3-0, 1-0 Ivy) at 1 p.m. The Bulldogs lead all FCS teams at 51.3 points per game and registered the first Ivy League victory over an FBS school (Army) since 1986 on Sept. 27, 49-43. Last week Yale trounced Cornell on the road, 51-13, but have lost the last two meetings with the Big Green. Dartmouth fans can watch the game live by subscribing to Big Green Insider on the Ivy League Digital Network (ILDN), and free audio is available on the ILDN with Dick Lutsk and Wayne Young calling the action on 99Rock, WFRD 99.3 FM in Hanover.
