PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Providence scored three times in the final 45 minutes and defeated the Dartmouth men's soccer team, 3-0, in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday evening at the Ray Tracey Track and Field Complex.
"Tonight was tough, I thought we were very good in the first half but we didn't capitalize on our opportunities,"head coach Chad Riley said. "It is always an abrupt ending unless you are the last team standing. It is certainly hard to process right now, but I couldn't be prouder of our team. They have competed all year so well, and continued to grow all year."
The game was scoreless for the first 48 minutes until Mac Steeves fired a shot into the back of the net from six yards out. Jeff Kilday and Phil Towler were credited with the assist. Eight minutes later, Thomas Ballenthin sent a cross from the left side of the field into the box over to Dominik Machado for the tally to take a two-goal lead.
"We knew getting the first goal was going to be important, and providence got it through a set piece and then we were pushing a bit when they got there second on a transition,"Riley commented. "Overall we played well, but our game is about goals and Providence executed very well. They are a very good team and I am sure they will make some noise in this tournament."
With 12 minutes left to play, Machado added his second goal of the game after Cleveland tried to play a loose ball, but the keeper was out of position.
Dartmouth controlled play for a majority of the opening half and finished with three shots on goal. In the fourth minute, senior Stefan Defregger sent a cross from the right wing that was caught by Providence keeper Keasel Broome. In the 17th minute, Providence moved its attack into the Big Green zone and tried to use the end line, but junior keeper Stefan Cleveland made a save on a chip by Julian Gressel.
The Big Green finished the half with an 8-3 edge in shots. Senior Colin Heffron recorded a pair of shots on goal in the 29th minute. Late in the frame, Heffron had a shot blocked from 15 yards out.
The Big Green finished the contest with a 15-12 edge in shots and took all seven corner kicks. Cleveland made two saves, while Broome had four.
Dartmouth ends the season with a 12-5-2 overall record and a share of the Ivy League title.
"We are sorry to see this season come to a close as I have truly enjoyed working everyday with this group, and I am sad not to be able to works with these seniors anymore. They have all been tremendous this year," Riley said.
