Happy Holiday's from Dartmouth WBB
The final home game of 2014 will commence on Saturday afternoon, as the Big Green welcome Loyola Chicago to Hanover. This is the lone eastern time zone contest for the Ramblers this season, as their remaining games will be played in the central time zone.
Air Swoopes
In her second season at the helm, former WNBA star Sheryl Swoopes is looking to make a name for herself in another light. Swoopes is a four-time WNBA champion, NCAA champion, and three-time Olympic gold medalist is hoping to make a change on the sidelines of the North Side.
Lord I was Born A Ramblin' Man
Entering the weekend, the Ramblers post a 2-7 record after falling to 25/rv DePaul on Wednesday,109-84. Winners of just two games in their first nine tries, Loyola is looking to snap a four-game losing skid before the holiday break.
Scouting the Ramblers
Taylor Johnson and Taylor Manuel lead the North Side based Loyola Ramblers in scoring this season. Johnson is the only player to score over 100 total points this season, averaging 13.6 per contest. Simone Law played in the first three games of the season before injuring herself for the second time in as any seasons. She's averaged 12 points per contest but was limited to just 19.7 minutes because of foul trouble. Manuel, a recent Purdue transfer, scored 14 points in her debut against the Blue Demons.
UNH Claims Granite State Championship
Sophomore Katie Vareika once again led the Big Green from the outside, but New Hampshire held on to an early lead to defeat Dartmouth (5-5), 60-44, on Thursday evening at Lundholm Gym. Vareika finished with a team-high 12 points on 4-of-7 from beyond the arc in 23 minutes off the bench. The Dartmouth bench contributed 25 points and played significant minutes. Freshman Andi Norman had seven points in the loss but shot well hitting 3-of-4 from the field with a free throw.
Vareika's Holiday Cheer
Vareika has become somewhat of a pre-holiday break all-star. In four career games nearing the break, Vareika has scored a combined 60 points. Last season, she scored 17 points on Dec, 16 at DePaul and then added 14 at Loyola Chicago on Dec. 19. This season, Vareika netted 17 points to tie her career-best at DePaul against Northern Iowa. In her last game at New Hampshire, Vareika dropped 12 points. In the four games, the South Easton, Massachusetts product connected on 16-of-31 from the outside.
May The 5th Be With You
Senior Tia Dawson had battled back from a season-ending injury in 2013-14 and in seven games this season, the Cedar Rapids, Iowa, native has played a big role in the Big Green's defense. Dawson so far has pulled down 35 rebounds (9-26) and has six blocks. Her stats this season have moved her into Dartmouth's all-time record books. She is currently 10th in blocks with 100 and 20th in rebounds with 196.
Vareika's Best Not Enough in UNI Defeat
Vareika tied a career-best with 17 points, but the Dartmouth women's basketball team fell to Northern Iowa, 62-46, on Dec. 13, at the McLeod Center. Vareika's 17 points came from 5-of-9 shooting from the outside, as the Big Green needed to combat a sharp shooting Northern Iowa squad that scored 30 points from the outside. The South Easton, Massachusetts, native previous best was set at DePaul on Dec. 16, 2013. Classmate Fanni Szabo added 13 points for the Big Green but was often face guarded and shot 6-of-20.
Who Made This Schedule?
For her first constructed non-conference schedule, Koclanes has put together a nice balance of home and away games to build the team into a cohesive group come Ivy League play. The calendar features five squads who qualified for postseason tournaments, four 20-win teams and six non-Ivy rematches from last season. This balanced slate will prepare her squad for the 14-game Ivy League season, beginning in January.
Meet The Staff, Again
Dartmouth retained its coaching staff from last season, as assistant coaches Maria Noucas and Addie Micir join director of basketball operations Michael Motta on Koclanes' staff once again.
