Final Games of the 2014 Calendar
After the Christmas Break, the Big Green will conclude the calendar year with a pair of road games at Niagara and Rhode Island. Both squads enter the games over .500 on the season. The Purple Eagles play in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference while Rhode Island competes in the Atlantic 10. This is Dartmouth's first meeting this season with teams from these conferences.
On the road With Niagara WBB
Earlier this season, the Niagara women's basketball team felt the hardship of a blizzard that disabled their bus for a full 24-hours. The team gained national exposure and was featured on CNN after driving back from Pittsburgh.
Somewhere over the Rainbow Bridge
At 5-4, the Purple Eagles sit atop the MAAC after defeating Saint Peter's and Manhattan earlier in the month. Unlike the Ivy League, the MAAC plays a pair of games in December since the conference plays 21 in-league games.
Scouting the Purple Eagles
Val McQuade leads the Purple Eagles in points and rebounds this season at 11.3 and 5.0 per game, respectively. Sylvia Maxwell is second on the squad at 11.1 points per game and Meghan McGuinness, who scored her 1,000th point in Niagara's last game is at 10.6.
Rhody Ram Showdown
Off to its best start since the 2007-08 season when the team, under Tom Garick, won 13 games. This season Rhode Island is led by former Northeastern head coach Daynia La-Force and already has eight wins on the season. Led offensively by Charise Wilson, who is averaging 16.8 points per game, the Rams are sitting on a seven-game winning streak as they wait for the Big Green to arrive in Kingston.
Big Comeback Pushes Dartmouth in OT
Junior Lakin Roland and sophomore Fanni Szabo combined for 42 points as the Dartmouth defeated Loyola Chicago, 70-58, in overtime on Dec. 20 at Leede Arena. Roland's 23 points and 15 rebounds led the way for the Green and White who finished the contest shooting 37 percent from the field. Dartmouth got a major spark from the outside, led by Roland who shot 4-of-9 from beyond the arc.
UNH Claims Granite State Championship
Sophomore Katie Vareika once again led the Big Green from the outside, but New Hampshire held on to an early lead to defeat Dartmouth (5-5), 60-44, on Thursday evening at Lundholm Gym. Vareika finished with a team-high 12 points on 4-of-7 from beyond the arc in 23 minutes off the bench. The Dartmouth bench contributed 25 points and played significant minutes. Freshman Andi Norman had seven points in the loss but shot well hitting 3-of-4 from the field with a free throw.
