Sailing - Open & Women's
vs Oberg Trophy

This is part three of DartmouthSports.com's five-part series highlighting 20 of the best moments from varsity student-athletes during the 2014 calendar year. These games, plays and events were selected by a group of individuals within the athletics department.
Due to the number of Dartmouth varsity programs, it was determined that a team may have no more than one highlight. While not every team is represented within this list, there was an effort made to include as many of the 34 varsity programs as possible.
This is not a countdown and there is no order to the events as they appear in this series. Its purpose is to highlight some of the tremendous accomplishments of Big Green student-athletes and teams during 2014.

Men's Soccer Earns Automatic Qualifying Bid to NCAA Tournament with Share of Ivy Title – Nov. 15
The Big Green used a 3-0 win against visiting Brown at Burnham Field in the final game of the regular season to win a share of the 2014 Ivy League title and earn the conference's automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament. Senior Alex Adelabu scored twice in the contest, while classmate Tommy Johnson netted his first career goal in the 80th minute to seal the win and send his team to the national tournament. Stefan Cleveland stopped three shots in earning the clean sheet.
Women's Basketball Defeats Eventual Ivy Champ Penn – Feb. 22
Dartmouth nearly led wire-to-wire in a close game against the eventual Ivy League Champion from Penn in front of a raucous Leede Arena crowd, taking down the Quakers, 53-50. Senior Nicola Zimmer '14 hit the game-winning bucket on a layup with nine seconds remaining after Penn had taken its first lead of the game in the final minute. Zimmer's winning shot contributed to Dartmouth's 30-10 advantage in points in the paint, a major factor in the Ancient Eight win.
John Bleday and Curtis King Advance to NCAA Championship in 5000 – May 31
Prior to the 2014 outdoor season, the Dartmouth men's track & field team had not been represented at the NCAA Outdoor Championships since 2008. That stretch ended on a Saturday night in Jacksonville, Florida, in late May as senior John Bleday and sophomore Curtis King punched their tickets to Eugene, Oregon, and the national finals of the 5000m. Running in the faster of the two heats, King secured one of the two at-large berths as his 14:11.75 had him sixth in his section as well as sixth overall. Bleday claimed second in his heat, earning an automatic berth to Oregon with a 14:13.04, a mark that was good for ninth overall.

Women's Sailing Wins 2014 National Championship – May 30
In the final week of May, the Dartmouth women's sailing team won its second consecutive Sperry Top-Sider National Championship to claim the Gerald C. Miller Trophy once again in 2014. The win came after defeating Yale by five points, 185-190, to become the first institution since Tufts in 1993 and 1994 to win back-to-back Miller Trophies. Then-junior skipper Deirdre Lambert was named the Quantum Women's Sailor of the Year for a second time as she also was recognized in 2013. Lambert also skippered the Big Green to a staggering victory in the A-Division with senior Avery Plough as they posted 60 points — 40 points ahead of second-place Yale. Dartmouth's B-Division pair was third with 125 to help secure the program's place atop the overall standings and a second straight national championship.
