Equestrian
vs Centenary (N.J.)
12/30/2014 11:12:00 AM | Baseball, Equestrian, Men's Tennis, Women's Track & Field, Athletics
This is part four of DartmouthSports.com's five-part series highlighting 20 of the best moments from varsity student-athletes during the 2014 calendar year. These games, plays and events were selected by a group of individuals within the athletics department.
Due to the number of Dartmouth varsity programs, it was determined that a team may have no more than one highlight. While not every team is represented within this list, there was an effort made to include as many of the 34 varsity programs as possible.
This is not a countdown and there is no order to the events as they appear in this series. Its purpose is to highlight some of the tremendous accomplishments of Big Green student-athletes and teams during 2014.
Part 1: Dec. 22 | Part 2: Dec. 23 | Part 3: Dec. 29 | Part 4: Dec. 30 | Part 5: Dec. 31
Baseball Defeats Yale in One-Game Playoff to Win Red Rolfe Division – Nov. 15
Dartmouth scored seven runs in the third inning as part of an 11-4 win against Yale on a Sunday afternoon in early May at Red Rolfe Field. The victory in the one-game playoff gave the Big Green its seventh-straight Red Rolfe Division Title and a berth in the Ivy League Championship Series against Columbia. The home team's bullpen surrendered just two runs over 7.1 innings, led by then-sophomore Duncan Robinson's 5.1 innings of work in which he shut down the Bulldogs' lineup and picked up his Ivy-leading seventh win.
Equestrian Wins 2014 Ivy Show – April 20
The Dartmouth equestrian team won its fourth Ivy Championship in program history in 2014 to join the Big Green teams from 1997, 2007 and 2010. The Green and White bested the host Big Red by six points in Ithaca thanks in large part to four individual wins from Lindsay Seewald (Intermediate Flat), Maya Johnson (Novice Fences), Catherine Conway (Novice Flats) and Justin Maffett (Walk-Trot).
Men's Tennis Defeats Four Teams Ranked in Top-65 Nationally – Spring
In a stretch from late January to early March, the Big Green defeated four teams ranked in the top-65 in the nation. In January, Dartmouth bested No. 58 Arkansas on the road and No. 63 East Tennessee State at home in Hanover. February saw Dartmouth hand No. 65 Cornell a 4-1 loss in the ECAC Indoor Championship at the Boss Tennis Center, while a Mar. 2 match in Bloomington, Indiana, ended with a 4-1 victory against the Hoosiers. The stretch helped the Green climb in the rankings, themselves, earning a spot as high as No. 34 in the country.
Abbey D'Agostino Completes the Distance Double Again at Indoor Nationals – Mar. 14-15In her final NCAA Indoor Championship, Abbey D'Agostino became the first woman in history to win the 3000m and 5000m in the same meet twice in a career after accomplishing the feat for the second consecutive year in mid-March. D'Agostino won the 5000m on a Friday night in Albuquerque and the 3000m the following evening to set a new standard in the women's distance double with the sixth and seventh, respective, individual national titles of her collegiate career, the best figure in Ivy league history. In recognition of winning the double again at Nationals, D'Agostino was named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) 2014 Women's Division I Indoor National Track Athlete of the Year for the second straight season.
