Dartmouth's volleyball team returns to action this Friday at its second of three consecutive road tournaments, this time traveling to Queens, New York, for the Jack Kaiser Tournament at St. John's. While there, the Big Green will face the host Red Storm and Fresno State on the first day, followed by St. Francis Brooklyn and New Hampshire on the second.
Opening Success – Dartmouth volleyball kicked off the 2014 campaign last weekend at the Greyhound Challenge in Baltimore, Maryland, returning home as champion following victories over host Loyola, Saint Francis (Pa.) and Quinnipiac.
Awards – Following the tournament, Paige Caridi was named the Most Outstanding Player after recording a double-double (28 kills, 21 digs), while Emily Astarita and Lottie MacAulay were named all-tournament.
Fresh Faces – The Big Green added four freshmen to the roster for the 2014 season. Outside hitters Sara Lindquist and Marisol Tracy, libero Morgan Waterman and middle blocker Morgan Dressel have all seen playing time so far. Also new to the team is LaKell Havens, who was hired as an assistant coach for the season, coming from New York University, where she served in the same role.
Scouting the Red Storm – Entering its third weekend of competition, St. John's is playing at home for just the second time this season, having defeated Saint Peter's on Sept. 1. The Red Flash opened their campaign with four consecutive wins before suffering their first loss to Oregon on Sept. 4. Most recently, they fell to Hawaii on Sept. 6.
Looking at the Bulldogs – Last weekend at the Sacramento State Invitational, Fresno State left with a record of 1-2 following a win against the host and losses to UC Santa Barbara and Loyola Marymount. Two days before their match against the Big Green, the Bulldogs will face LIU Brooklyn at 3 p.m. This is the first time the two teams have ever met.
Scouting the Terriers – At its home tournament last weekend, St. Francis Brooklyn wrapped things up with one win and two losses after falling to the New Jersey Institute of Technology and Manhattan and defeating Hofstra. The Terriers had a tough start to the season, dropping three consecutive matches before winning against Quinnipiac.
Looking at the Wildcats: Most recently at the Golden Flashes Classic, UNH wrapped up the weekend with one win against Morehead State and a pair of losses to Evansville and Kent State. Before heading to New York, the Wildcats will make a pit stop in Rhode Island for a match against Bryant.
Next up for Dartmouth: The Green and White will compete in its third and final road tournament next weekend, Sept. 19-20, at the Seton Hall Tournament in South Orange, New Jersey. They will face Middle Tennessee State, host Seton Hall and Fordham before hosting their first home match of the season against Bryant on Sept. 23.
