BALTIMORE, Md. – Dartmouth volleyball was crowned champion of the Greyhound Challenge on Saturday following a successful season-opening tournament. After defeating Saint Francis (Pa.), 3-1 on Friday evening, the Big Green won against host Loyola, 25-21, 25-19, 25-23, and Quinnipiac, 25-20, 25-22, 25-21 the following afternoon. Dartmouth is 3-0 on the season.
In addition to being named champions, junior Paige Caridi was named the Tournament Most Outstanding Player and sophomores Emily Astarita and Lottie MacAulay were selected to the All-Tournament team.
“I was really excited about the way our team came out to play today,” said head coach Erin Lindsey. “It was nothing like the night before. We were aggressive and very disciplined and everyone went after it, which is why we were as successful as we were.”
Playing each other for the first time in program history, Dartmouth and Loyola were evenly matched throughout the majority of the first set, tying the score four times before the Green and White went on a four-point rally to take and keep the lead with a score of 13-11, but the Greyhounds always lingered within two points. Following an attack error and an ace on the other side of the net, Dartmouth shut the set down following two attack errors.
In the second set, Dartmouth won the first three points and never surrendered the lead. With 12 kills by the Big Green, four apiece by Caridi and Astarita, Loyola never got within three points before a kill by MacAulay ended another set in Dartmouth's favor. In the third set, the host took the lead and remained ahead until the end of the set. With the score tied at 23, a kill by Caridi gave the Big Green a one-point lead and an attack error for the opponents ended the match.
Junior Stacey Benton led the team with her 27 assists and was a close second with nine digs, with sophomore Julia Lau leading that category with 11. Caridi had 13 kills and Astarita had two aces.
Against Quinnipiac, the opponent won the first point, but did not keep the lead for long, as kills by senior Lucia Pohlman and freshman Sara Lindquist gave Dartmouth a slight edge. Four consecutive service errors on the other side of the net took the score to 6-4 in favor of the team from the Upper Valley. With a close score of 18-16, Dartmouth scored four unanswered points off kills by freshman Morgan Dressel and Astarita, an ace by freshman Morgan Waterman and two errors, ending the set soon after following another error by Quinnipiac.
The second set started in the Bobcats' favor following four Dartmouth errors, but the Big Green came back to tie the score six times before finally taking the lead at 21-20 after an attack error. Three errors by Quinnipiac and a kill by Lindquist was all the Green and White needed to end the set. The final set started and ended in Dartmouth's favor, which earned the first two points off another kill by Lindquist and an ace by Benton. Following eight kills, six of which were by senior Alex Schoenberger, Dartmouth took a 10 point lead and never allowed the opponent to get much closer throughout the remainder of the set.
As a team, Dartmouth had 36 kills, eight aces, seven blocks and 41 digs against Quinnipiac.
“I am really proud of Emily Patrick, who played all six rotations, had great passing and defense, and totaled 11 digs,” Lindsey continued. “Morgan Waterman did a great job again and had really good performances all weekend, while Alex Schoenberger showed up and completely tore it up. Overall, there was a great team effort and I am excited to see where we go from here.”
Next weekend, Dartmouth will travel to Queen's, New York, for the St. John's Tournament, playing in four matches on Friday and Saturday Sept. 12 and 13.
