ITHACA, N.Y. – Dartmouth volleyball won its fourth consecutive match with a 3-1 defeat of Cornell (22-25, 25-21, 25-16, 25-20) at Newman Arena at Bartels Hall on Friday evening.
The Big Green improved to 8-7 and 5-1 in Ivy League play, while the Big Red dipped to 4-12 and remain winless in conference action with an 0-6 mark.
Junior Emily Astarita led both teams in kills (18) and points (19.5), while senior Kayden Cook had 29 assists. Freshmen Sierra Lyle and Jordan Cornwell each had three aces and classmate Zoe Leonard led with 16 digs.
“I am really proud of the team effort tonight,” head coach Erin Lindsey said. “We had some struggles with our execution, especially from the service line. But, the team stayed together and worked hard for the win. We had some great performances from some players seeing their first major action this season. Morgan Dressel was unstoppable in the middle and Emily Patrick came into the outside hitting position and was really efficient. We are looking forward to continuing to improve tomorrow night against a good Columbia team.”
The first set was close and, before long, Cornell was riding a 13-10 lead. Four straight points off a kill and an ace by Lyle, and kills by Astarita and senior Kaira Lujan put Dartmouth up, 14-13. The score was tied five times until the 19th point, when the Big Red took the lead and kept it. While allowing just three Green points, Cornell made it game point on a Dartmouth error and ended things with a kill.
Neither team maintained control during the second set and the 13 ties occurred before the 19th point. With the score tied at 18, an ace by Cornwell, two kills by Dressel and one by Astarita put the Green ahead, 22-18. Cornell made it a 22-20 set, but a Lyle kill and a Big Red error put Dartmouth ahead, 24-20. A kill put the home team one point closer, but an Astarita kill made it a 1-1 match.
Dartmouth found its groove in the third, dominating control right from the beginning. After a four-point Cornell run that put the Big Red ahead, 5-2, eight points by the Big Green, separated only by a kill on the other side of the net, gave Dartmouth an 11-6 edge. Another four consecutive points off two errors and a kill by Caridi and Patrick put the Green ahead, 20-11. Cornell made it 22-16 following two errors and a kill, but kills by Lujan and Patrick and an ace by Cornwell put set two in Dartmouth's hands.
Although Cornell took the first point, four straight off three Big Red errors and a Caridi kill gave Dartmouth an 8-5 edge in the fourth. The two teams traded points, but an error by the home team put the Green at match point. Cornell went on to score three points to hold Dartmouth there and get within four points (24-20). A kill by Lujan ended the match.
The Green will take on Columbia at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
