THIS WEEK'S GAMES
The Dartmouth women's basketball team returns to Leede Arena for a two-game homestand against American on Dec. 17 and Niagara on Dec. 18.
LAST TIME OUT
The Big Green are coming off a 94-52, road loss to Louisville on Tuesday. Dartmouth could not overcome a powerful Cardinals offense that shot 52 percent from the field and 46 percent from behind the arc. Junior Fanni Szabo led the team in points with 14, while hometown hero, senior Lakin Roland grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and scored 11 points. Despite facing a tough ACC opponent, the Big Green were not intimidated, outshooting Louisville in the second quarter. Dartmouth also found success at the charity stripe going 12 for 20.
SCOUTING THE EAGLES
American is off to a rough start to the 2015-16 season, going winless in eight straight games. This is a stark difference from last year when the Eagles won the Patriot League as a No. 1 seed before losing to third-seeded Iowa in the NCAA Tournament. Recently American fell, 74-45, on the road at James Madison. Prior to that contest, the Eagles lost to UMBC and Wake Forest by just one point. As a team, American averages 49.9 points per game and shoots 37.2 percent from the floor. Senior forward Michelle Holmes leads her team with 11.3 points and 7.3 rebounds per game.
SCOUTING THE PURPLE EAGLES
Niagara is in the midst of a three game losing streak after dropping an 83-60 contest to conference foe Monmouth. The Purple Eagles are 0-2 in the MAAC and 1-6 overall. Road games have not been kind to Niagara, as the Purple Eagles have lost all four contests away from New York. Their offense is led by leading scorer, Kaylee Stroemple, who averages 12.3 points and 6.4 rebounds per game.
LAST TIME AGAINST AMERICAN
On Dec. 1, 2013, Dartmouth fell to American, 77-54, on the road at Bender Arena. Three members of the Big Green finished the day in double figures in scoring including Katie Vareika with 13. Despite the positive offensive production, Dartmouth could not overcome the Eagles strong presence on the court as four Eagles finished in double digits in scoring. At the half, the Big Green trailed only by nine points, but a 14-2 American run to start the second half lifted the Eagles to victory.
LAST TIME AGAISNT NIAGARA
On Dec. 28, 2014, Dartmouth defeated Niagara 76-70 on the road. Vareika's 16 points paved the way to victory for the Big Green as she shot six of eight from the floor and went four of six from behind the arc. Roland added 13 points and nine rebounds of her own, while Szabo scored 12 in the victory. The Purple Eagles opened the contest with an 8-0 run, but a resurgent Dartmouth team responded with a 15-4 run that spanned 6:22.
STARTING STRONG
Dartmouth has been solid in the first quarter of games this season, outscoring opponents 140-127.
BLOCK PARTY
The Big Green have been improving on defense. Dartmouth has recorded 28 blocks this season compared to its opponents 19.
ROLAND RISING IN THE RANKINGS
Roland has been adding to her career numbers elevating her in some of the Big Green's all-time record rankings. After her game against Louisville, Roland moved into 10th place in free throws attempted with 331. She is also 10th in free throws made with 242. Roland passed Sue Stuebner in rebounds for 14th all-time with 581.
RACE TO 1,000
Szabo and Roland are both knocking on the door of a major milestone, as both players are close to 1,000 career points. Currently Roland has 930 points good for 14th on the all-time list, while Szabo is not far behind with 910 points.
