THIS WEEKEND
For the second weekend in a row, the Dartmouth volleyball team will be on the road, this time facing Yale on Friday and Brown on Saturday.
LAST TIME OUT
The Big Green played two road games last weekend, falling to Penn, 3-2 (25-18, 20-25, 25-22, 13-25, 11-15) and Princeton, 3-0 (18-25, 16-25, 19-25) the following day.
Against Penn, Dartmouth opened the first set with a 2-0 lead courtesy of a kill by Kaira Lujan and an ace by Sierra Lyle and would hold on to that lead for the majority of the set. When Penn tied things at 4-4, the Green went on a 14-4 run to make it 18-8 in their favor. The home team ended up making it a closer set, but an error by the Quakers ended it before they were able to catch up.
There were seven ties at the beginning of the second set. With the Big Green leading, 15-13, the Quakers scored seven consecutive points to snatch the lead away (20-15). The two teams traded points and Dartmouth got within three (23-20), but two more points on the other side of the net gave Penn its first victory.
The Big Green took seven of the first 10 points in the third set following kills by Emily Astarita, Sara Lindquist, Danielle Glinka, aces by Zoe Leonard and a Quaker error. Dartmouth had a 6-1 run to put a second win within reach (23-18). A Penn error put Dartmouth up, 2-1.
The Quakers dominated the fourth set. With Penn ahead, 15-12, the home team scored nine straight points to make it game point (24-12). A Quaker error gave one more point to the Big Green, but a Penn kill sent the match to a fifth set.
The fifth started in the Quakers' favor (5-1), but the Green were quick to make it a close set. Following kills by Astarita and Molly Kornfeind and a pair of Penn errors, the score was tied at six-all. Four more ties later and, after an Astarita kill, the score was 10-10. The Quakers won the next four points to get to match point and, after one more Big Green point, shut the set down.
Against Princeton on Saturday, Dartmouth won the first point, this time off a kill by Glinka. The Tigers managed to pull ahead and soon had a 12-4 advantage. Dartmouth got the next three points to slightly close the gap (12-7). The Big Green held the home team at match point to get one more kill by Kornfeind, but the Tigers got their final point right afterward.
Princeton won the first three points of the second set, but a Glinka kill put Dartmouth on the board. The Big Green closed the gap and soon, trailed by just one (11-10). Six straight points by the Tigers gave them a definitive lead (21-14). Dartmouth held Princeton at game point, but a kill on the other side of the net gave set two to the home team.
The first three points of the third set went in Princeton's direction but, a few minutes later, Dartmouth had tied the score at six-all. With the Green trailing by one (14-13), the Tigers won five straight points to make it a 19-13 set. Dartmouth got as close as four points behind (22-18), but were allowed just one more point off a Princeton error when the match was ended.
SCOUTING YALE
So far in Ivy play, the Bulldogs are 2-1 after defeating Brown (3-0) and Cornell (3-1) and falling to Columbia (3-2). Yale is currently tied for second in the conference, sitting behind Princeton and Columbia who remain undefeated.
LAST TIME VS. THE BULLDOGS
Dartmouth went 1-1 against Yale last season, defeating the Bulldogs, 3-1 in October before dropping a five-set heartbreaker a month later. The last time the teams met on Nov. 14, they were two of four teams that were part of the race for first place in the Ivy League. Harvard was first, Dartmouth and Princeton were tied for second and Yale was still alive in fourth. The Big Green fell in the first set (25-17), but claimed the next two (25-17, 25-23) to lead, 2-1. A fifth set was forced after Yale took the next set (25-22) and the Bulldogs had a 15-13 win in the final set to claim the victory.
SCOUTING BROWN
The Bears have had a slow start to the season, entering the weekend with an overall record of 3-10 and 1-2 Ivy mark. Brown opened conference action with a 3-0 loss to Yale, but turned things around by opening the following weekend with a 3-2 defeat of Cornell. The Bears concluded the weekend with a 3-0 loss to Columbia.
LAST TIME AGAINST THE BEARS
The Big Green were undefeated against the Bears in 2015, winning in straight sets the first time around before going to five sets in November. In the closer of the two matches, Dartmouth dropped the first set (25-19), but came back to take the next two (25-23, 25-18). Brown tied it at two sets each with a 25-20 victory in the fourth and the Green came back to win the fifth (15-10).
