EUGENE, Ore. – Abbey D'Agostino '14 finished fifth in the final of the 5000m Sunday evening at the U.S. Olympic Trials at Oregon's Hayward Field.
The former seven-time individual national champion during her time at Dartmouth, D'Agostino ran a 15:14.04 to take fifth. It was the second time in as many tries taking fifth in the 5000m final at the Olympic Trials after also finishing in that same position in 2012.
With the top-three individuals earning a berth on the U.S. Olympic team in the event, D'Agostino's only hope for a spot to represent America in Rio next month would be if two of the four runners ahead of her (Molly Huddle 1st, Emily Infeld 4th) pulled out of the event in favor of focusing on another in which they qualified: the 10,000m.
Running for Team New Balance, D'Agostino was sidelined with an injury for much of the indoor season, but still managed to make her way to Oregon for the trials. She never dropped out of the top-seven on Sunday, but was unable to outkick the lead pack and missed out on passing Infeld in fourth at the finish line by seventeen-hundredths of a second.
