Big Green athletes came up big stopping the opposition in wins in New York this weekend. Defensive lineman Rocco Di Leo sacked the Columbia quarterback three times to preserve a 28-12 win for the football team. Senior Hailey Valerio backstopped the field hockey team to victory twice this weekend including a penalty stroke save against the Lions.
Their efforts are rewarded by being named the DartmouthSports.com Athletes of the Week.
Each week, DartmouthSports.com will spotlight two outstanding student-athletes - one male, one female - as the DartmouthSports.com Athletes of the Week. Student-athletes may be chosen based upon their efforts both on and off the field of competition.
Rocco Di Leo, 5-Sr., Elmhurst, Ill., DL, Football
Di Leo registered a career-high three sacks against the Lions as part of his season- and team-high seven tackles, six of the solo variety. His first sack came on a Columbia third-down play during its first drive at the Big Green 4-yard line, forcing the Lions to settle for a 33-yard field goal. He collected his second on the next Columbia possession after Dartmouth had taken a 7-3 lead, while his third sack proved pivotal early in the third quarter with the Green holding a 14-6 lead. The Lions had pushed into Dartmouth territory but faced a 4th-and-3 only to be denied by Di Leo, who dropped the Columbia QB back 10 yards to allow the Big Green offense to take over.
Hailey Valerio, Sr., Glen Mills, Pa., GK, Field Hockey
Hailey Valerio posted a pair of consecutive 2-1 wins this past weekend for the Dartmouth field hockey team. She started things off with a victory in New York on Friday that needed a stop of a Columbia penalty stroke bid with under three minutes to play. She stacked the pads and turned aside the shot that would eventually help preserve the win, the 150th for head coach Amy Fowler. Two days later at UMass Lowell, Valerio again was the defensive anchor in another one-goal Big Green win. She currently has 99 saves and ranks second in the Ivy League with 7.07 per game.
