HANOVER, N.H. – After a seventh place finish in the Ivy League standings a season ago, the Dartmouth women's soccer team enters 2018 with an even mix of experience and youth and is looking to compete for an Ivy League championship. In the 2017 campaign the Big Green lost four Ivy League matches in overtime which was the difference in what could have been a top three finish in the standings.
Head coach
Ron Rainey returns to the helm for his fifth season, while fourth year assistant
Cord Farmer is also back,
Nicole Ragano enters her first year as an assistant coach after spending the last two seasons at California Baptist University.
Rainey: "Our goals are simple, we want to prepare our bodies and minds to practice every day with a nice intensity level and prepare for each match with thoughts on stepping on the field with the confidence to win. We expect all of the players here to make an impact on our program on a daily basis by working hard and developing as a cohesive group."
Among the returners is senior midfielder
Remy Borinsky who led Dartmouth and was eighth in the Ivy League with five goals last season. Borinsky was named First Team All-Ivy League and was an NEWISA All-New England selection in 2017.
Sophomore midfielder
Erin Kawakami who was named Second Team All-Ivy last season, sophomore defender
Bonnie Shea who earned Honorable Mention honors and junior midfielder
Alyssa Neuberger are back for the new season. The trio combined for seven goals and four assists while each played in all 17 games last season. Seniors
Lauren Lucas and
Chloë Conacher, and juniors
Zoe Enright and
Lorna MacFarlane will also play pivotal roles this fall.
Rainey: "We expect all of the players here to make an impact on our program on a daily basis by working hard, developing as a cohesive group, and having fun while taking classes. Preseason has been great with the intensity with which we have trained and if we can do that on a daily basis after games start, and after classes start we will have a fantastic season."
Sophomore goalkeeper
Mariel Gordon returns after gaining valuable experience in her first year. Last season as a freshman, Gordon started all 17 games for the Big Green and tallied seven wins with 61 saves and four shutouts. She will compete with junior
Lorna McElrath for time in front of the net.
Rainey: "Our goalkeepers both pushed each other to get better each day thus far and we look forward to seeing them train day in and day out."
Seven freshmen have been added to the roster and are expected to contribute on the field.
Rainey: "Our freshmen are a fun group who are getting to know each other better and the team better. We want them to continue to train hard while also striving for consistency and that will help them individually and the team as well."
The schedule begins on Friday, August 24 with a home match against Quinnipiac at 5:00pm. From there the Big Green hit the road for three games including meetings at Oregon and Oregon State. Dartmouth plays its next three out of four games at Burnham Field before opening Ivy League play at home against Brown on September 22 at 7:00pm.
