This Day in Dartmouth History: March 24

Three big lacrosse wins and a fourth straight trip to the NCAAs for men's basketball
Dartmouth didn't just go to Coyne Field and escape with a win against No. 6 Syracuse … the 16th-ranked Big Green seemingly demolished the sixth-ranked Orange on their home field. Early on it didn't seem that would be the case as current Dartmouth assistant coach Tee Ladouceur scored just 53 seconds into the game to give Syracuse the 1-0 lead. The Orange added another goal 22 seconds later and in the blink of an eye, the Green and White were down, 2-0.

Greta Meyer '11 led the Big Green with five goals and an assist while Sarah Parks '12 added four goals and two helpers. In goal, Julie Wadland '10 collected seven saves while the frustrated Syracuse squad was whistled for seven yellow cards while Dartmouth had nary a one.
Prior to their triumph in central New York, the Big Green had defeated No. 8 Notre Dame, 12-8, in South Bend on March 7 before taking a break for exams. It remains the last time Dartmouth has won back-to-back road games against top-10 teams.
March 24, 1944: Men's Basketball returns to the Final Four

Ozzie Cowles, who had coached the team since the 1936-37 season, was serving in the U.S. Navy during the 1943-44 season, so Earl Brown took over the reins and did not miss a beat. Led by All-American and captain Audley Brindley '46 at over 16 points a game on the season and Robert Gale with 12.5 more, Dartmouth quickly took control of the game. But it was Harry Leggat who led the offense with 11 points in the opening half, matching the output of Brindley and Gale combined, as the Big Green opened up a 28-13 lead at the intermission.
Dartmouth didn't ease up in the second half, outscoring the Cardinals by a 34-26 margin to complete the rout, 63-38. Gale produced five baskets in the stanza to finish with a game-high 17 points with Leggat totaling 15 and Brindley 13. Future College Basketball Hall of Fame inductee Joe Vancisin '44 (as Yale's head coach for 19 years and the executive director of the National Association of Basketball Coaches for 17 more) chipped in six points as one of the starting guards as well.
The victory sent the Big Green to the Final Four for the second time in three years. They would be matched up the following day with Ohio State, which had defeated Temple by 10, 57-47. That is a story for tomorrow, however …

March 24, 2007: Men's Lacrosse outlasts #18 Brown in longest game in program history

Â
The game seesawed back-and-forth from the beginning. Brown took a 3-1 lead at the start of the second quarter, but with five of the next six goals going to Dartmouth, the Green took a 6-4 advantage into the half. Two goals by freshman Ari Sussman and one by the Bears gave Dartmouth an 8-5 lead before three fourth-quarter Brown markers forced overtime.
Â
Throughout three four-minute overtime sessions, defense was on par and the score remained tied, 8-8. With 2:51 gone in the fourth OT, sophomore Brian Koch took a feed from senior Nick Bonnaci and gave the Big Green their third win in a row.
Â
Also scoring for Dartmouth were Bonacci, senior Wilson Handler, sophomore Jonathan Livadas and sophomore Kyle Lagratta. Bonacci had three assists that afternoon as well, while freshman Michael Novosel made eight stops In net as each team was credited with 41 shots.
Â
March 24, 2018: Women's Lacrosse wins at #16 Princeton for the first time in 10 years

Â
Elizabeth Mastrio '19 led the way with five goals and six points in the 15-12 thriller. And a thriller it was as a 13-7 second-half lead seemed like a sure thing to produce a Dartmouth road win. The 16th-ranked Tigers furiously chipped away at the deficit, however, with a sudden surge of offense. The home team would get as close as two, 14-12, before Tori Chanenchuk '20 put the game out of reach with the final score of the day.
Â
For Chanenchuk, it was her second of the afternoon and earned eternal bragging rights with her sister Colby, a senior on Princeton, for picking up the win in their final head-to-head game against one another.
