Rumley blanks Columbia — twice — once with a no-no
March 28, 2015: Kristen Rumley '15 dominates Columbia in doubleheader
There have only been six no-hitters in the 26-year history of Dartmouth softball. Before sophomores Brooke Plonka and Maddie Augusto combined for one against North Carolina A&T just last month, the most decorated pitcher in program history, Kristen Rumley, tossed a no-hitter in the first game of a doubleheader at Columbia on this day in 2015. And the senior proceeded to keep that momentum rolling into game two.
Rumley struck out nine batters over six innings in the first game of the day, and only a walk to start the third kept her from hurling a perfect game. She punched out one in the first, the side in the second, one in the fourth, two more in the fifth and finished the game with two K's in the bottom of the sixth as the Big Green cruised to an 8-0 win. On top of her performance in the circle, Rumley went 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs and a run scored, while Katie McEachern '16 doubled, homered, scored three times and drove in two.
The native of Katy, Texas, followed up her no-hitter with another shutout in the nightcap, surrendering just two hits while fanning five in the six-inning contest in a 9-0 Dartmouth victory over the Lions in game two. A leadoff double in the second ended her hitless streak at seven innings, but she would go on to twirl shutouts in her next two starts as well, posting a string of 28 consecutive scoreless stanzas. Maddie Damore '17 was the hitting star of this game, going 2-for-3 with a homer and four RBIs, while her classmate Karen Chaw also belted one over the fence.
Rummaging through the record books, Rumley is the Big Green's strikeout leader in a career (669), season (197) and a single game (15). She also is tops in career wins (61) and career complete games (60).
