May 12, 2005 — Women's Lacrosse knocks off No. 12 Syracuse in opening round of the NCAA Tournament
In the opening round of the 2005 NCAA Tournament, the Dartmouth women's lacrosse team used a second-half rally to overcome a 7-4 halftime deficit and defeat 12th-ranked Syracuse in a 9-8 win. Senior Katieanne Christian '05 led the way with five goals in the contest as the fifth-ranked Big Green advanced to the second round of the national postseason.
Â
Trailing at halftime for just the third time all season, Dartmouth was able to overcome that deficit and come back to win for the first time in 2005, picking an incredible time to do so.
Â
The comeback came early on in the half as the home team took an 8-7 lead with 19 minutes and 11 seconds remaining on a tally by junior Kristen Zimmer '06. Christian added her fifth goal three minutes later for a little cushion that came in handy when Syracuse answered with 14:28 still to play, making it a 9-8 contest. That's when the Dartmouth defense took over, holding the No. 12 Orange off the scoreboard following a two-minute possession before running four minutes off the clock at the other end. Another long Syracuse possession resulted in just one shot attempt and a turnover where the Green could run more time off the clock and secure a berth in the second round.
Â
The win — powered in large part from Christian and seven saves from junior goalkeeper Devon Wills '06 — moved the Green and White to 15-2 overall on the year and 10-0 at home on Scully-Fahey Field.
