The 2018 Canadian Women’s Olympic Hockey Coach leaves after three years behind the bench
Dartmouth College Director of Athletics and Recreation Harry Sheehy today announced that the Big Green women's hockey head coach, Laura Schuler, has stepped down from her position after three seasons of guiding the program.
Under Schuler's leadership, team members earned 39 ECAC Hockey All-Academic honors and seven ECAC Player of the Week accolades. She also coached an All-Ivy second-team selection (Robyn Chemago, 2017), three All-Ivy honorable mentions (Kennedy Ottenbreit, 2017; Christie Honor, 2019; Lotti Odnoga, 2020), and two Academic All-Ivy honorees (Mackenzie St. Onge, 2017; Christina Rombaut twice, 2019, 2020).
During her tenure, Schuler also served as the head coach of Canada's National Women's Team from 2016-18 and led Canada's Women's Olympic Hockey Team behind the bench at the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea. In preparation for the Games, she led the National Team to an overall record of 30-14-4 against the Alberta Men's Midget AAA Hockey League (AMHL) and international opponents. The former silver medalist for the team herself in 1998, she selected the team that captured another Olympic silver medal after guiding the squad to a 4-0-1-0-0 (W-OTW-OTL-L-T) record.
"I would like to thank the amazing student-athletes and my entire staff for their genuine commitment to excellence and their hard work in building a solid foundation for this program," Schuler stated. "It has been my privilege to lead our group for the past four years and I am grateful to the Dartmouth Athletics Department, the players and our community for supporting my Olympic journey as head of Canada's National Women's Team. I'm confident that this team will continue to build on its strong foundation and that great things are on the horizon for this program."
Schuler arrived in Hanover in 2016 as the program's ninth head coach, accumulating an overall record of 19-61-6 and a 13-48-5 mark in ECAC Hockey play.
Schuler's first year was highlighted by a 3-2 overtime victory over No. 10 Princeton, while the team also had a convincing 4-1 win over Yale to end the season. Upon returning to Dartmouth after the Olympics for the 2018-19 campaign, she guided the Big Green to a thrilling, 3-2 triumph in overtime against the defending national champion, Clarkson. This past winter, Dartmouth played a total of five overtime games, going 2-0-3. During the final road weekend of the year, Dartmouth defeated Union and RPI to sweep a road trip for the first time since 2015.
"I would like to thank Laura for providing Dartmouth with her passion and expertise for three seasons," said Sheehy. "She set high standards for the student-athletes and the program, and I'm sure we'll continue to see evidence of that well into the future."
An announcement regarding the search for Schuler's successor will be forthcoming.
