HANOVER, N.H. — The South Carolina Football Hall of Fame released its inaugural Preseason College Football All-South Carolina Teams today for the 2020-21 season, and Dartmouth cornerback
Darren Stanley was among the 84 South Carolina natives selected, earning honorable mention from the organization. As expected, the teams are littered with players from the University of South Carolina and Clemson, but Stanley is one of only three players named that is on the roster of a collegiate team outside of the Carolinas, Georgia, Tennessee and Alabama.
A product of Conway High, Stanley enjoyed a terrific campaign for the Big Green in 2019 while helping the team earn a share of the Ivy League title for a league-record 19th time in program history. The rising senior was named to the All-Ivy League Second Team in the defensive backfield while leading the conference with 14 pass breakups and tying for the league lead with 15 passes defended.
Stanley's per-game average of 1.5 passes defended was seventh among all qualified FCS players. Twice he broke up four passes in a game, the first time against Yale in a 42-10 victory, and again against then-ninth-ranked Princeton in a 27-10 triumph at Yankee Stadium. In the season finale, he came up big at Brown with a career-high eight tackles while also breaking up two throws, both of which came on third down inside the Big Green 10 to force the Bears to settle for field goals on each occasions in the 29-23 win that clinched the league crown.
The 2020 Dartmouth football season — along with all other Ivy League fall sports — has been postponed due to the pandemic.
Notes: The other two players on rosters outside of the South are Notre Dame cornerback Nick McCloud (second team) and Army West Point safety Cedrick Cunningham Jr. (honorable mention) … Clemson had the most players honored (18) while South Carolina was second (15) followed by Coastal Carolina (8) and The Citadel (6) … a total of 26 schools were represented.
