Isaiah Johnson and Allie Winstanley are the Big Green Picks of the Week
Two-game winning goals and a pick-six led to three Big Green victories this week. Junior Allie Winstanley continued her outstanding success on the women's soccer team booting the Green to victory in a non-conference game followed by a win over Ivy rival Cornell. On the gridiron, senior Isaiah Johnson played a big part in upsetting the Princeton Tiger football team with six tackles and a 73-yard interception return for a touchdown.
Their efforts are rewarded by being named the DartmouthSports.com Athletes of the week.
Each week, DartmouthSports.com will spotlight two outstanding student-athletes - one male, one female - as Athletes of the Week. Student-athletes may be chosen based upon their efforts both on and off the field of competition.
Allie Winstanley, Jr., Concord, Mass., F, Women's Soccer
Winstanley scored twice in the final week of play for the Big Green. She scored the game winner against Merrimack, Monday night and the game winner against Cornell, Saturday afternoon. Against Merrimack Dartmouth (6-7-1, 1-5 Ivy) struck early and never looked back. Winstanley fired a shot off her right foot from the top of the box 24 seconds into the game to give her team a 1-0 lead. Down 1-0 in the second half against the Big Red, Erin Kawakami tied the game at one, leading to Winstanley's game-winning goal off an assist from Izzy Glennon.
Isaiah Johnson, Sr., Beverly Hills, Mich., CB, Football
The senior from Beverly Hills, Michigan, played a big part in the Big Green's 31-7 victory over then-16th-ranked Princeton on Friday night at Memorial Field. Not only did Johnson record six tackles, one assisting on a loss, and break up a pass, but he essentially put the game away with a 73-yard interception return for a touchdown just before the third quarter expired to boost Dartmouth's advantage to 24 points and complete the scoring as it turned out.
The interception was the first pick-six of Johnson's career, not to mention the first time he picked off a pass. The 6-3, 205-pound corner is fifth in the Ivy League (and second on the squad) with 54 tackles on the season and 11th with six passes defended.
