Dartmouth's interim AD served as the athletics director there for 10 years
HANOVER, N.H. — Dartmouth Interim Director of Athletics and Recreation Peter Roby, a member of the Dartmouth Class of 1979, will be among the 13 individual inductees and two teams that will be inducted into the Northeastern Athletics Hall of Fame on Thursday, Nov. 11.
Roby spent 10 years (2007-17) as the athletics director at Northeastern, overseeing a department that won nine regular-season conference championships, 17 postseason conference championships, eight New England Championships in track and field, and two women's Beanpots. No fewer than 15 teams qualified for their respective NCAA Tournaments, along with a number of individuals in swimming and diving as well as track and field. Success abounded in the classroom as well with a 93 percent graduation rate for student-athletes in 2016 that led the Colonial Athletic Association and was the highest ever for the university.
Roby also spent five years as the director of Northeastern's Center for the Study of Sport in Society, which seeks to create social change using the influence and appeal of sports. In addition, he is a former member of the NCAA D-I Men's Basketball Committee, which selects and seeds the annual NCAA tournament field, and has worked as a strategic consultant to the NCAA, including in its leadership development programs.
Co-captain of the Big Green men's basketball team as a senior in 1978-79, Roby was a government major and went on to obtain his master's in leadership at Northeastern. He began his coaching career as an assistant coach for the Dartmouth men's team before stints at Stanford and Army West Point. He then spent three years as an assistant at Harvard before serving as the head coach of the Crimson for six seasons.
Roby is a member of the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics, created in 1989 by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, which works to develop and lead change that prioritizes the education, health, safety, and success of student-athletes. He is also an inaugural member of the Black AD Alliance, formed by Division I athletics directors in July 2020 out of the national outcry for social justice reform in America, and serves on the Allies Subcommittee within the alliance.
The induction ceremony, honoring inductees in the Classes of 2020 as well as 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will take place at Blackman Auditorium on the Northeastern campus on Thursday beginning at 6 p.m.
