The Maine native has been a part of the Dartmouth administration for 13 years
HANOVER, N.H. — Dartmouth Executive Associate Athletics Director Richard Whitmore will be among the 17 individual inductees and one high school team that will make up the Class of 2020 for the Maine Basketball Hall of Fame.
Whitmore, the son of legendary Colby coach Dick Whitmore, was known for his quick and heady play as well as his deadly perimeter shooting. He helped Waterville High School establish itself as one of the top programs in Maine in the mid-1980s as he made the All-Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference team in each of his four years. He made the all-state third team as a sophomore, and after helping Waterville win the state title despite missing the first half of his junior year to an injury, he earned first-team all-state honors and was named a Converse National High School All-American as a senior.
As a college player at Brown University, Whitmore led the team in assists and shot a team-best 43 percent behind the arc as a sophomore, then succumbed to a knee injury in his junior campaign that suddenly ended his career. He went on to coach teams at Daniel Webster and Kenyon College before stepping away from the game into athletics administrative, first at Wesleyan and now at Dartmouth for the past 13 years.
The induction ceremony, delayed a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will also include seven legends of the game and take place on August 22 at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor, Maine.
