The field hockey team is 4-3 on the season after downing Merrimack, 5-0, in convincing fashion. Junior Holley Cromwell had a hand in three of the goals leading to the win. The football team played their first game of the season and came home from Indiana with a 28-18 win over the Beacons of Valparaiso. Senior Jalen Mackie played an instrumental part in the victory with twelve tackles and an interception, earning Ivy League honors as well as the DartmouthSports.com honor.
Their efforts are rewarded by being named the DartmouthSports.com Athletes of the week.
Each week, DartmouthSports.com will spotlight two outstanding student-athletes - one male, one female - as Athletes of the Week. Student-athletes may be chosen based upon their efforts both on and off the field of competition.
Holley Cromwell, Jr., Virginia Beach, Va., F, Field Hockey
Junior Holley Cromwell was instrumental for the Big Green in their 5-0 win over Merrimack on Sunday afternoon at Chase Field. The 5-7 native of Virginia Beach was involved in the first three goals. Just two minutes into the game the Big Green opened the scoring as Cromwell passed the ball to Meg Barnes who slotted it home. In the second quarter the junior forward scored on a redirected ball and followed that up with an assist in the third quarter.
Jalen Mackie, Sr., Miramar, Fla., LB, Football
Mackie, a 6-1, 240-pound senior from Miramar, Florida, led the Dartmouth defense with a dozen stops — two more than he had in his career entering the game — including two critical tackles for a loss on 3rd-and-short situations that forced the Beacons to punt. His biggest play, however, came in the fourth quarter with Valparaiso driving and trailing by only three points when Mackie picked off a pass near midfield and returned it 28 yards to the Beacons 25. Two plays later, the Big Green pushed into the end zone for some breathing room and what turned out to be the game's final score.
