HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth Big Green football team was ranked in the top 25 of both of the final Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) polls conducted by Stats Perform and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA). Dartmouth claimed 20th overall in the Stats Perform poll and 23rd in the coaches' poll, marking the third straight season in which the Big Green have played that they have been included in the final polls and fourth time in their past six seasons.
Dartmouth finished the 2021 season with a 9-1 overall record and 6-1 mark in the Ivy League to earn a share of the conference crown, its league-record 20th championship. The other team atop the Ancient Eight standings was Princeton, which the Big Green beat on Nov. 5 by a 31-7 score. The Tigers had an identical record and was also ranked in the polls — 24th by Stats Perform and 21st by the AFCA.
The Dartmouth defense was once again one of the stingiest in the country, having allowed the third-fewest points (14.7) after surrendering the second fewest in its two previous campaigns. The Big Green also ranked in the top 20 in red zone defense (64.0 percent, second), passing yards allowed (159.9 per game, fourth), total defense (271.0 yards allowed per game, fifth), team passing efficiency defense (112.95, 12th) and rushing defense (111.1 yards per game, 17th).
The offense was no slouch itself, leading the nation in fewest passes intercepted (3) and total turnovers lost (8) while ranking among the top 25 in completion percentage (68.8, second), tackles for loss allowed (3.5 per game, second), team passing efficiency (155.91, seventh), third-down conversion percentage (44.3, 14.1), rushing offense (193.7 yards per game, 21st) and sacks allowed (1.4 per game, 25th). In addition, Dartmouth was 10th nationally in punt returns at 12.75 yards per return and 32nd in scoring at 30.6 points per game.
The Big Green were guided by the Ivy League Coach of the Year, Buddy Teevens, who was also a finalist for the Eddie Robinson Award as the FCS Coach of the Year. The defense featured third-team All-America linebacker Jalen Mackie, a senior who was also a finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award as the top defensive player in the FCS. Dartmouth had another All-American on the other side of the ball in offensive lineman Jake Guidone, a fifth-year left guard who was named to the third team by the Associated Press. Both Mackie and Guidone were selected for the Division I All-New England Team as well.
No fewer than 17 players earned All-Ivy League honors for the Big Green, including two quarterbacks (a first in Ivy League history) in junior Nick Howard (as a running back) on the first team and fifth-year Derek Kyler on the second team, with the latter also a finalist for the Bushnell Cup.
Notes: This is the sixth time since the Division I split that the Big Green have ended the season in at least one national poll — 1990 (17th), 1996 (17th), 2015 (23rd), 2018 (15th) and 2019 (21st) … the Ivy League has had two teams in the final national rankings four times in its last six seasons (2015-19, '21), and Dartmouth was one of the teams in all four instances (2015, '18, '19 and '21) … North Dakota State, which won its ninth FCS championship game in the last 11 years, was the unanimous choice atop the rankings in both polls.
