Women's Golf and Men's Soccer have a successful week
Big Green athletes excel on many venues across the board. This week's competitors come from entirely different sports. Freshman Sophie Thai shattered Big Green women's golf records while winning the Lady Blue Hen Invitational. Senior Alex van Schalkwyk scored two goals in two men's soccer victories including an Ivy League win over visiting Yale.
Â
Their efforts are rewarded by being named The Richards Group Athletes of the week.
Each week, DartmouthSports.com will spotlight two outstanding student-athletes - one male, one female - as Athletes of the Week. Student-athletes may be chosen based upon their efforts both on and off the field of competition.
Â
Â
Alex van Schalkwyk, Sr., Cape Town, South Africa., F, Men's Soccer
Â
Alex van Schalkwyk scored goals in back-to-back games last week as the Dartmouth men's soccer team defeated Hartford and Yale. For his efforts he earned Ivy League Player of the Week honors.Â
Â
The senior tacked on the final goal of the contest in Dartmouth's 3-0 win over Hartford on October 11. Four days later, van Schalkwyk opened the scoring in the Big Green's 3-2 victory over Yale, helping Dartmouth secure its first Ivy League win of the season.
Â
Â
Sophie Thai, Fr., Los Altos, Calif., Women's Golf
Â
Freshman Sophie Thai produced a historical performance for the women's golf team at the Lady Blue Hen Invitational in Delaware this past weekend, carding a 69-72-69—210 (-6), shattering the school record for lowest three-round score. No other Big Green golfer had ever broken par over three rounds. She began the tournament by tying the Dartmouth record for a single round with a 3-under 69 before wrapping up the first day of play with an even-par 72 to hold a one-stroke lead heading into the final round. Thai then duplicated her first-round score to win the tournament by five strokes, sinking 14 birdies along the way. Her three rounds of par or better are two shy of the program record for an entire career, and she just played in her third tournament as a freshman.
