Dartmouth’s Streak Snapped at Princeton

The Big Green came up short on the road in three sets
PRINCETON, N.J. — The Dartmouth volleyball team entered the battle with second-place Princeton riding a four-match win streak, but suffered a 3-0 (25-22, 28-26, 25-12) loss Saturday evening at Dillon Gymnasium.
With the inaugural Ivy League Tournament rapidly approaching, Dartmouth moved to 14-6 (6-4), while Princeton improved to 17-3 (9-1).
Ellie Blain's nine kills led the Dartmouth offense while Makenzie Arent and Karen Murphy combined for 28 assists. Princeton's Melina Mahood notched a match-high 12 kills. Lindsey Kelly racked up 45 assists.
"We came out strong and had confidence in the gameplan and executed well against a very good team," said head coach Gilad Doron. "They made a run in the second set and we didn't respond the way we should have, and we didn't have enough in the tank during the third. We'll go home, clean some things up and get ready for a weekend at home."
Dartmouth was neck-and-neck with Princeton during the opening set and even held a late 19-18 lead, but wasn't able to hold off the Tigers as untimely errors proved costly in a closely contested 25-22 decision. In a set that featured 10 different ties, Dartmouth was bolstered by key hits from Amelia Gibbs and Ava Roberts until taking the lead, and back-to-back winners by Bomi Ogunlari and Taite Ryan kept the Tigers from running away once they had stormed back.
Dartmouth rallied after trailing 5-1 early to eventually lead 14-8 in the second set. A resurgent eight-point run with Ali Silva at the service line included four straight kills, started and finished by Ryan. Princeton strung together kills of its own and battled back to a 16-16 stalemate. Dartmouth faced set point and was kept afloat by Ogunlari's clutch kill, but were only able to trade points with the Tigers until Avery Luoma's consecutive kills handed the visitors a 28-26 loss.
Princeton asserted itself in the third set with a 25-12 win. The difference maker was the Tigers' early eight-point run that allowed them a commanding 14-5 lead on their home court. Both sides largely traded points following that stretch until Melina Mahood's match-point winner.
Dartmouth returns home Friday, Nov. 4 to face Cornell. Opening serve at Leede Arena is set for 7 p.m. and the match will streamed on ESPN+ with Brandon Bajorsky on the call.
