HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth volleyball team claimed the first set over Brown, but weren't able to quell the defending Ivy League champions over the remaining three as the Big Green fell in four sets Friday evening at Leede Arena.
Â
"We performed very well out of the gate and played great volleyball at times," said head coach
Gilad Doron. "I was proud of the way the team continued to fight until the end. I have to give credit to Brown – they outplayed us, but we can learn from tonight's match and move on."
Â
Emma Engstrom racked up a season-high 28 digs in the loss, while
Amelia Gibbs recorded a season-best 13 kills. Freshman
Kauany Gutz followed with a career-high eight kills.
Makenzie Arent eclipsed 20 assists for a second consecutive match with a team-best 22. Brown was led by Kayla Griebl, who went for 15 kills, and a 49-assist effort by Cierra Jenkins. Dartmouth allowed a team to hit greater than .300 for the first time this season as the Bears registered a .358 percentage.
Â
Both sides hit well over .300 in the opening set as Dartmouth came away with a 25-21 win. Gibbs, who leads the Ivy League in hitting percentage, was looked upon toward the end of the game with the Big Green clinging to a three-point lead. The junior came through with a kill that allowed Dartmouth to win its first set over Brown since 2019.
Â
The two sides traded points in a neck-and-neck opener all the way to a 16-16 deadlock until Dartmouth (10-4, 2-2)Â gained a slight advantage on a pair of Brown mistakes, and later tallied crucial points thanks to kills by
Bomi Ogunlari and
Grace Wiczek. Brown (7-6, 3-1) fought back with a kill of its own before Gibbs sealed a first-set victory for the Big Green.
Â
Brown responded to the tune of a 25-19 triumph in the second set, despite a late charge by the Big Green. Dartmouth trailed 23-15 until consecutive Brown errors provided life, and the hosts later stayed alive with kills by
Ava Roberts and Gibbs, but the Bears were able to win the set on Kayla Griebl's powerful attack.
Â
Gutz led the Big Green in the third set with five kills on just seven attacks, but the Bears' strong start doomed Dartmouth from the start. Brown earned the game's first eight points and although the Big Green largely went point-for-point with the reigning champions from that point on, they weren't able to mount a comeback. The Bears eventually notched a 25-16 victory after Jenkins' kill.
Â
Dartmouth was the victim of another slow start in the fourth and final set. The Bears raced out to an 11-5 kill before another Gutz tally stopped the bleeding, but the visitors went back to work soon after with a four-point run. Trailing 23-14, the Big Green enjoyed a much-needed six-point hot streak that featured two Engstrom aces. The Bears, however, came up with back-to-back kills to end the match and escape the chance of a fifth set.
Â
Following the loss, Dartmouth prepares to take on Yale at Leede Arena. First serve is set for 5 p.m.
