THIS WEEKEND
The Big Green begin the 2022 season competing in the UCI Invitational hosted by UC Irvine. Dartmouth takes on familiar foes Sacred Heart Friday and Holy Cross Saturday before squaring off against the hosts to cap the action-packed weekend late Saturday night.
Â
LAST SEASON
Dartmouth comes off a 2021 season that saw 15 victories – a mark that hadn't been reached since 2011. The eventual Ivy fourth-place finishers started 6-0 after winning a pair of tournaments and wrapped up non-conference action with an 8-1 record. The Big Green started 0-5 in the Ancient Eight, but emphatically righted the ship, winning seven of eight before falling to Ivy champion Brown in the season finale.
Â
SEASON OPENERS
Dartmouth is an even 5-5 in its last 10 openers, but has won its last two. The Big Green took down North Carolina A&T State in straight sets for their 2019 debut and did the same to Binghamton in 2021. Head coach
Gilad Doron is 3-2 in season openers during his Dartmouth tenure.
Â
SOME NOTABLE RETURNERS
The Big Green return a pair of Second Team All-Ivy honorees in
Ellie Blain and
Emma Engstrom. Blain led the team in kills (317) a season ago while posting six double-doubles en route to Team MVP designation. Engstrom led the team in digs (444) as a freshman and ranked first in the conference in digs per set (4.77).
Grace Wiczek returns to the court for the first time since 2019 after missing the entirety of the 2021 season. The 6-2 outside hitter led the 2019 squad in kills per set (2.54) as a freshman. Setter
Makenzie Arent became just the eighth player in program history to reach 1,000 career assists last season and currently ranks eighth on the career assists list with 1,115.
Amelia Gibbs also returns after registering the second best hitting percentage in single-season program history (.348).
Taite Ryan and
Karen Murphy are both back after ranking in the top five for sets played in 2021.
Â
SCOUTING SACRED HEART
The Pioneers enter the weekend with a 1-2 record after competing in the Carolina Classic. Sacred Heart fell to host South Carolina, bounced back to defeat Winthrop and later dropped a five-set nailbiter to Omaha. A perennial power in the NEC, the Pioneers are three-time defending champions and posted a 19-10 record in 2021. Dartmouth fell to that powerful 2021 squad 3-1 in the Hartford Invitational. Sacred Heart returns four All-Conference selections, including four-time NEC Setter of the Year Sarah Ciszek, who is one of only three players in the nation to record multiple triple-doubles in the young 2022 season.
Â
SCOUTING HOLY CROSS
Holy Cross sits at 1-3 on the season after picking up its first win Tuesday at Merrimack. The Crusaders previously went winless in three matches at the Iona Tournament. Eventually finishing 2-25 last year, they succumbed to the Big Green 3-1 in the Dartmouth Invitational. Gibbs paced Dartmouth with 13 kills in that mid-September matchup.
Â
SCOUTING UC IRVINE
The Anteaters went 1-2 last weekend at the SMU Invitational, falling to the host Mustangs and Stephen F. Austin before topping DePaul in three sets. UC Irvine comes off a 17-13 season and went 2-1 in last year's UCI Invitational with the lone loss coming to Boise State. Onye Ofoegbu was named First Team All-Big West a season ago after ranking top-15 nationally in hitting percentage and currently leads the team in kills and blocks.
