Whitmore Receives Sheila Culbert Distinguished Employee Service Award

The Lone Pine Excellence Awards ceremony took place on campus on Wednesday

HANOVER, N.H. – Dartmouth Deputy Athletics Director Richard Whitmore was honored by Dartmouth College on Wednesday with its Sheila Culbert Distinguished Employee Service Award, as part of the Lone Pine Recognition Program. The award was established by Jim and Susan Wright the year Whitmore joined the Dartmouth Athletics department in 2008.
The award recognizes a Dartmouth College staff member who has made a difference to the college and to his or her colleagues, demonstrates a commitment to the highest work ethic and exemplary work performance, is both selfless and unwavering in dedication to the institution and is relentless in the pursuit of excellence.

"I am humbled to be the recipient of the 2022 Sheila Culbert Distinguished Service Employee Award and want to thank my colleagues in Athletics for their support and partnership," said Whitmore. "Athletics, by its very nature, relies on teamwork and we have a terrific team."
Whitmore was promoted to Senior Associate Athletics Director before the 2011-12 school year and Deputy Athletics Director in 2021. With decades of experience in collegiate athletics, Whitmore supervises the administration of football, men's and women's basketball, baseball, men's and women's golf and men's and women's soccer, as well as directing and overseeing the planning and development, management and operations of Dartmouth's sport and recreational facilities.
"Richard is the definition of a consummate professional," said Mike Harrity, Haldeman Family Director of Athletics and Recreation. "He is kind, humble and reliable to a fault. Every single day, Whit displays an uncommon dedication to Dartmouth."
A dedicated and integral member of the Athletics Department, Whitmore previously spent nine years at Wesleyan University as an Associate Director of Athletics. He also has six years experience coaching college basketball and basketball at Kenyon College and Daniel Webster College.
Whitmore graduated from Brown University in 1990, earning his master's from Wesleyan in 2011. He was a two-sport letterman for the Bears in basketball and golf.
"Richard is always a phone call away – ready and willing to bring a solution-oriented mindset to solving any problem," said Harrity. "We are exceptionally fortunate to have Whit on our team."
