The Big Green came up short in three close sets against one of the nation’s premier offenses
HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth volleyball team suffered its first Ivy League loss Friday evening at Leede Arena as Princeton downed the Big Green in three sets.
Â
Dartmouth (9-3, 1-1) recorded a .239 hitting percentage in the loss while Princeton, who leads the nation in kills per set, posted a .297 clip. Ellie Blain and Amelia Gibbs notched seven kills apiece, largely set up by Karen Murphy, who collected a team-high 16 assists. Fellow setter Makenzie Arent came close to a double-double with 13 assists and nine digs. Princeton's Avery Luoma went for 19 kills, while Lindsey Kelly racked up 37 assists.
Â
Dartmouth's late run in the opening set wasn't enough as Princeton (10-2, 2-0) opened the match with a 25-21 victory. The two sides traded points until the Tigers eventually jumped out to a 23-16 lead with a six-point run. The Big Green responded, benefiting from Taite Ryan's ace and Piper Stevens' kill, along with a couple Princeton errors. Kauany Gutz kept Dartmouth alive at set point after Princeton's run-ending kill, but the Tigers eventually claimed the final point on Lucia Scalamandre's attack.
Â
The Big Green once again found themselves in a hole during the second set and were able to battle back, but fell short against Princeton's powerful attack. The Tigers held an early lead and looked ready to dominate the game, but Dartmouth hung around until it eventually trailed by four late. Ava Roberts' kill brought the score to 19-15 and despite plenty of momentum on the Big Green's side, the Tigers answered with consecutive kills and hardly looked back on their way to a 25-17 triumph.
Â
The third set saw the Big Green take a late lead after trailing for the majority. They were ahead 18-17 following a Princeton attack error and held off the Tigers enough to hold a 21-19 advantage after a clutch Blain kill. Princeton went on to claim four of the final five points and sealed the match with Valerie Nutakor's ace.
Â
Dartmouth returns to Leede Arena Sunday afternoon at 12:30 p.m. to face Penn in another Ancient Eight clash. The match is set to air nationally on ESPNU.
