Larry Lawrence '80 and Liz Walter '89 will be honored at the Ivy League Tournament
HANOVER, N.H. — The Ivy League announced its 2023 Class of Legends of Ivy League Basketball today, and Dartmouth alumni Larry O. Lawrence '80 and Elizabeth A. Walter '89 were honored with their inclusion. Each Ivy League institution is represented by one male and one female honoree, as selected by their athletics department.
One of only two Dartmouth men's basketball players to be named the Ivy League Player of the Year to date and just one of seven to average 20 or more points in a single season, Lawrence was an explosive post player for the Big Green throughout his career.
Following a solid sophomore debut, the 6-4 Lawrence starred for the Green and White as a junior, leading the squad in scoring and rebounding to earn team MVP honors and a spot on the All-Ivy League First Team. He was named captain for his senior year, but a broken foot sidelined him for the entire season. Even so, the Atlanta Hawks selected the native of Macon, Georgia, in the eighth round of the NBA Draft, but he returned to school to finish his college hardwood career.
The decision to return allowed Lawrence to be named the Ivy League Player of the Year and earn AP All-America honorable mention in 1980-81, averaging 21.8 points and 8.7 rebounds. He finished his career with 1,122 points, 10th in the Big Green scoring annals at the time, and still ranks among the five most accurate shooters in program history.
Lawrence went on to a 16-year professional basketball career — two years in the CBA and 14 more in France. Twice he helped teams to championships overseas, plus led the Pro B League in scoring at 32.4 points per game for Le Mans in 1988-89.
Upon retirement from professional basketball, Lawrence returned home to start a successful career in finance. He now heads Corporate Sales for Loop Capital Markets as a Managing Director.
While still in France, Lawrence founded a charity, "Les Enfants de la Terre" (Children of the Earth), dedicated to helping underprivileged youths in orphanages across France. He continues his charitable work to this day, having served on the Board of Directors of the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship and currently sitting on the board of the Black Heart Foundation.
Lawrence currently lives in Westchester County, New York, with his wife Arlene, and the two are proud parents of Larry Jr. and Alyssa.
There wasn't any doubt that Liz Walter would be a star when she arrived in Hanover in the fall of 1985. The 6-0 forward was a Converse All-American out of Sheridan, Wyoming, and quickly established herself as a force with which to be reckoned.
Walter helped the Green win a conference championship right out of the gate as she was named the Ivy League's Rookie of the Year and to the All-Ivy First Team. Her leadership ability stood out so much that she was named the captain as a sophomore and proceeded to lead Dartmouth to another Ivy title, averaging a double-double while being chosen as the Ivy League Player of the Year.
Walter's junior campaign was nearly a carbon copy of her sophomore season. The captain once again averaged a double-double, earning Ivy League Player of the Year honors for a second time and leading the Big Green to a third consecutive league crown.
After three seasons, Walter already had 1,286 points and 731 rebounds to her credit. Yet she made the difficult decision to forego her senior year to participate in a program that helped prepare her for graduate study in biology, traveling through Costa Rica and Jamaica. While Walter could have climbed the career charts even further — she remains fourth in scoring average and third in rebounding average — her decision paid off in the end.
After Dartmouth, Walter graduated from the University of New Mexico School of Medicine with a faculty commendation in research. She completed her internship and psychiatry residency at Yale where she was the chief resident on the Clinical Neuroscience Research Unit.
Dr. Walter has lived and worked in Montana in clinic sites, private practice, hospitals, prison systems and a federal health center, plus founded and served as the director of the Equine Assisted Psychotherapy Program. Currently, she works in the Montana VA Healthcare System where she is the director of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Program.
Walter and her husband, Dan, have twin daughters Maddie and Willa, both of whom play Division I basketball (Lehigh and Montana, respectively).
Each legend will be formally honored at the 2023 Ivy League Men's and Women's Basketball Tournaments March 10-12 at Jadwin Gymnasium in Princeton, New Jersey. A variety of ticket offerings are on sale now via IvyMadness.com.
