New England Championship and ITA Men's tennis regionals on tap
Three corners of the North American continent were represented this weekend. Vancouver, British Columbia and Boca Raton, Florida triangulated with the small town of Hanover, New Hampshire for outstanding athletic endeavors. Representing Florida, Ellie Tymorek won the New England women's cross country championship by an impressive 20 seconds. On the other corner, hailing from British Columbia is sophomore Henry Ren. Ren advances in the men's tennis ITA super regionals with wins in singles and doubles.
Their efforts are rewarded by being named The Richards Group Athletes of the week.
Each week, DartmouthSports.com will spotlight two outstanding student-athletes - one male, one female - as Athletes of the Week. Student-athletes may be chosen based upon their efforts both on and off the field of competition.
Henry Ren, So., Vancouver, British Columbia, Men's Tennis
Henry Ren has qualified for the ITA Super Regionals in both singles and doubles after a strong showing at last weekend's ITA Regionals at Yale. The sophomore defeated Harvard's Alan Yim in three sets on Monday to punch his ticket in singles after an exciting Sunday, which saw Ren and Alex Knox-Jones upend Yale's Eric Li and Roee Benya. ITA Super Regionals are hosted by Princeton and begin Friday, Oct. 20.
Ellie Tymorek, Jr., Boca Raton, Fla., Women's Cross Country
Running in her first race since indoor heps last season, Ellie Tymorek of the Dartmouth women's cross country team won the New England Championship on Saturday afternoon at Franklin Park. This was the first time she had run at Franklin Park since NCAA regionals as a freshman. It should serve as a nice warmup for when she returns October 28 to compete for the Ivy championship.
Leading from the opening gun, she opened a sizeable gap at the 1.5k split and never looked back, finishing the race with a time of 18:04.8 and winning the race by 20.1 seconds.
Tymorek finished ahead of second-place Isa Meyers of Northeastern.
