CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The late Buddy Teevens, former Dartmouth College Robert L. Blackman Head Football Coach, has been named recipient of the New England Football Writers George C. Carens Award presented to a person who through his or her life has made significant contributions to the sport of football In New England. The award will be presented at the New England Football Writers Captains and Awards Banquet on Thursday, December 7, at the Sheraton Framingham (Mass.) Hotel and Conference Center.
Teevens, a former Ivy League Player of the Year as a quarterback for the Big Green as well as a varsity hockey player at Dartmouth, served two different periods as head football coach and won five Ivy League titles. His overall record at Dartmouth including both of his tenures was 117-101-2. He also served as head coach at Stanford, Tulane and the University of Maine, and was an assistant coach at DePauw, Boston University, the University of Illinois and the University of Florida.
One of the great innovators in college football, Teevens was the first college coach to eliminate traditional tackling drills from practice. He worked with the engineering school at Dartmouth to develop a remote controlled robotic dummy that simulated tackles. He was a pioneer in promoting diversity in the sport, by both recruiting people of color and through the Dartmouth Football Minority Mentorship Program which he set up with a former classmate. Teevens also led the way in hiring women as assistant coaches. Two of his female hires are currently coaching in the NFL.
Teevens was instrumental in both assisting in the creation of, and then administrating the prestigious Manning Passing Academy for 26 years. He was a leading proponent of reducing injuries in football, even testifying before Congress about concussions in football in 2016.
Teevens is the fourth Dartmouth coach to be honored by the NEFW with the Carens Award. Tuss McLaughry (1955), Dave Morey (1978) and Joe Yukica (1986) are the previous recipients.
