PHILADELPHIA — The Dartmouth volleyball team put together an impressive .315 hitting percentage in its final match of the 2023 campaign, completing a season sweep of Penn with a 3-1 (25-21, 21-25, 25-15, 25-17) victory on Saturday evening at The Palestra.
Â
The Big Green finish the season with an overall record of 9-14 and a 6-8 mark in the Ivy League. The Quakers meet the end of the road at 4-20 and 2-12 in the Ancient Eight.
Â
The last time Dartmouth visited Penn, the Big Green walked away with their first win at The Palestra since 1999. This time, Dartmouth has back-to-back season sweeps over the Quakers for the first time in program history. The Big Green had never won more than two consecutive matches in the all-time series between the two programs before 2021, but now have five straight to their credit.
Â
Senior
Amelia Gibbs was the star of the show for the Big Green in the season finale, racking up 15 kills on just 22 attempts with no errors for a jaw-dropping .682 hitting percentage. Only five players in program history have put together better hitting percentages with 15 or more kills. Gibbs finishes the season with a .360 hitting percentage, which is the second best in program history (minimum of 150 attempts). She owns three of the four most efficient single-season performances in program history and the highest career hitting percentage for any current or former Big Green player.
Â
Beyond Gibbs' outstanding performance, it was a team effort that allowed Dartmouth to hit better than .300 against an Ivy League opponent for a second time this season.
Maddie LaFata had 12 kills and hit .500, while
Ellie Blain totaled 11 at a .375 clip. Fifth-year senior
Makenzie Arent notched 27 assists in her final match with the Big Green.
EllaMae Fitzgerald and
Piper Stevens both had double digit digs for a second straight match. Stevens and
Emma Sinclair were both excellent at the service line with four aces each.
Â
12 kills from Madison Risch wasn't enough for the Quakers, who avoided the sweep by claiming the second set, but were quelled in the third and fourth. An early 7-1 run in the third set helped the Big Green create separation in the important game with the match tetering on a 1-1 tie. That set the tone for a 9-1 run in the fourth set, which delivered an insurmountable 20-11 Big Green advantage. A LaFata kill followed by a
Kauany Gutz ace were the final points needed for the four-set triumph.
Â
Dartmouth hit better than .400 in both the first and third sets, and held Penn under .100 in the third.
Â
The Big Green wrap up their first year under head coach
Kevin Maureen Campbell and turn the page to the 2024 season, in which Dartmouth will welcome back several key contributors, including three of their five leaders in points per set (Gutz, LaFata and
Ava Roberts).
