ALBANY, N.Y. — The Dartmouth women's basketball team aimed to notch its third straight win on Tuesday night while on the road at UAlbany, but fell short with a 68-57 loss at the Broadview Center despite strong shooting and standout offensive performances from
Doreen Ariik and
Mia Curtis.
The Big Green, who entered the game riding the momentum of recent wins over Navy and Merrimack, moved to 4-5 on the season, while the Great Danes hiked their win streak to four and improved to 8-2.
Ariik led Dartmouth with a career-high 16 points, including 12 in the first half, and Curtis followed with a season-best 15. Curtis and
Carrington Washburn were both 2-of-3 from the perimeter, helping the Big Green shoot 41.7 percent (5-of-12) from beyond the arc. That performance was outdone by UAlbany, who shot better than 50 percent from three, led by a 6-of-8 showing from Meghan Huerter. She, along with Helene Haegerstrand and Kayla Cooper, combined to account for 54 of UAlbany's 68 points.
First-year guard
Nina Minicozzi registered a career-high eight assists and did so with just one turnover. Ariik grabbed a team-high eight rebounds to complement her 16 points, narrowly missing her third double-double of the season.
The Big Green raced to a 10-4 lead early in the first quarter with buckets from each member of the starting five by the 6:00 mark. UAlbany claimed its first lead with a Huerter 3-pointer at the 3:30 mark and never trailed again, grabbing a 17-14 lead by the end of the first quarter and widening the margin with a strong second.
The Great Danes shot 9-of-12 from the field in the second quarter to extend their lead to 39-27 by halftime. UAlbany led by 17 with less than two minutes remaining until the break, but back-to-back scores from Ariik and a last-second Washburn triple helped the Big Green salvage some momentum.
UAlbany enjoyed more hot shooting in the third, connecting on 4-of-5 from deep, and fell just short of achieving a 20-point advantage as the quarter ended with a Haegerstrand triple to give the Great Danes a 58-39 edge, which matched their largest lead of the contest.
The Big Green looked to be back within striking distance early in the fourth, cutting the lead to 13 with 7:12 remaining, thanks in part to a Curtis 3-pointer. The deficit was back to 17 with less than four minutes remaining after a Haegerstrand layup. Dartmouth outscored UAlbany by a margin of 18-10 in the second half, but it wasn't enough to mount a comeback.
Following Tuesday's loss, the Big Green are back in action when they visit UMass Lowell on Thursday, Dec. 14 to cap a three-game road stretch. The game, set to tip at 6 p.m., will be streamed live on ESPN+ and fans can follow live stats through DartmouthSports.com. Dartmouth returns home on Thursday, Dec. 21 when it hosts Lafayette for Education Day.
