"Though 'round the girdled Earth they roam"
The Dartmouth alma mater states, "Though 'round the girdled Earth they roam…" This week's athletes of the week have come a long way to become members of the Big Green. Junior Doreen Ariik comes to Hanover from Nairobi and brought a double-double to the court for the women's basketball team. Hailing from Sweden, third-year men's basketball captain scored a career-high 18 points in a home win over Boston University.
Their efforts are rewarded by being named The Richards Group Athletes of the week.
Each week, DartmouthSports.com will spotlight two outstanding student-athletes - one male, one female - as Athletes of the Week. Student-athletes may be chosen based upon their efforts both on and off the field of competition.
Romeo Myrthil, Jr., Solna, Sweden, G, Men's Basketball
Romeo Myrthil was the story offensively for Dartmouth men's basketball team in Wednesday's 63-54 win over Boston University. He scored a career-high 18 points on just seven field goal attempts (making five). He was 3-of-4 from 3-point range, including two 3-pointers as part of Dartmouth's 9-0 run to turn a 39-39 tie into a 48-39 lead. Myrthil scored 13 of Dartmouth's 30 second-half points, as the Big Green never trailed. Thursday (Dec. 14) was Myrthil's birthday, but his home country of Sweden is six hours ahead of the Eastern time zone, so Myrthil's career performance came on his birthday… in Sweden. Myrthil went on to score nine points at Le Moyne on Saturday, making third start of season. He also grabbed a career-high six rebounds against the Dolphins while adding an assist, block and two steals.
Doreen Ariik, Jr., Nairobi, Kenya, F, Women's Basketball
Doreen Ariik averaged a double-double across two games for the Dartmouth women's basketball team, scoring a career-high 16 points at UAlbany before grabbing 14 rebounds to help the Big Green defeat UMass Lowell on the road. Ariik ranks second in the Ivy League, and 20th in the nation, in rebounds per game with 10.4. Her impressive play on both ends has helped the team to a 5-5 start, which more than doubles Dartmouth's 2022-23 win total.
