TEMPE, Ariz. – The Dartmouth men's hockey team and No. 12 Arizona State once again skated to a tie on Saturday evening at Mullett Arena, this time by a score of 1-1. The Sun Devils won the ensuing shootout in seven rounds, 2-1. A 35-save performance from
Cooper Black propelled the Big Green to a tie against another nationally ranked opponent while
Cooper Flinton tallied his fourth goal of the season.
The Big Green sit at 2-3-6 while the Sun Devils move to 11-3-4.
"I thought
Cooper Black was excellent," said
Reid Cashman, the Koenig Family Head Coach of Dartmouth Men's Hockey. "I'm happy with special teams, having to kill off a five-minute major, and our power play gets a big goal from
Cooper Flinton."
After a scoreless first period, Arizona State took a 1-0 lead midway through the second period after Brian Chambers was able to tap home a loose puck from close range.
The Big Green went on the power play minutes later and took advantage.
Nikita Nikora passed the puck out to the right side to
Luke Haymes, who then passed it back across the middle to Flinton. Flinton controlled the puck before firing it past Arizona State goaltender Gibson Homer into the top right corner to tie the game.
It looked like Dartmouth was going to take a 1-0 lead in the first period, but
Oskari Vuorio's goal was waved off after a challenge from Arizona State.
Black made several key stops throughout the game, including one from close range in the first period. He made 19 saves in the first period, the most he's had in one period this season. Black made a crucial save in overtime on a 1v1, keeping the Big Green with a chance to take the win during the extra five-minute period.
Speaking about what the team will take away from the trip, Cashman said, "There should be some confidence. You go on the road against a top 15 program, and you go toe-to-toe with them for 130 minutes over two nights. So, my hope is that, as I told the guys after the game, that this first half will set us up to make a jump in the second half [of the season]."
Dartmouth will be off for several weeks, returning to action with the 34
th annual Ledyard Classic just before the start of the New Year. The four-game tournament will be held on Friday, Dec. 29 and Saturday, Dec. 30 and will be available to stream on ESPN+. Dartmouth's game against Lake Superior State will also be on NESN while Saturday's game against either Maine or RIT will be on NESN+. Tickets for the Ledyard Classic can be purchased online through the Dartmouth Athletics ticket office.
Notes: The Big Green remain unbeaten against nationally ranked opponents with a 0-0-5 record.
