The state of California is well represented this week
Big Green athletes come from all over the world. This week our spotlighted athletes both hail from the golden state of California, with Rachel McCarroll from San Jose and Tyler Cox from Valley Glen. Sophomore McCarroll pitched two complete games for the softball team in California. Meanwhile the baseball team was in Florida where Cox went 7-for-7 with a homer and three walks in two games at USF.
Â
Their efforts are rewarded by being named The Richards Group Athletes of the week.
Each week, DartmouthSports.com will spotlight two outstanding student-athletes - one male, one female - as Athletes of the Week. Student-athletes may be chosen based upon their efforts both on and off the field of competition.

Rachel McCarroll, So., San Jose Calif., P, Softball
Â
Rachel McCarroll pitched a pair of complete games for the Big Green in matchups against Saint Mary's and Maine in California. The sophomore led Dartmouth's stellar defensive efforts against the Black Bears and Gaels to secure a pair of wins prior to Ivy League action this weekend.
Â
McCarroll struck out five batters, allowing just one run in a complete game performance against Saint Mary's on March 17 in a 2-1 win. The following day, she pitched her first collegiate shutout, blanking Maine and lifting the Big Green to a 1-0 victory.
Â
Â
Tyler Cox, Jr., Valley Glen, Calif., IF, Baseball
Â
Cox began the week by reaching base in 10 straight plate appearances, going 7-for-7 with a homer and three walks in two games at USF, then was 5-for-11 with a walk and a stolen base in a three-game series at UCF. His 4-for-4 performance in the opener against the Bulls led the way for Dartmouth's first victory of the year, 6-1. All told, the junior shortstop hit .667 (12-for-18) — including his first home run of the season — in the five games during the week with an on-base percentage of .727 while scoring four runs and driving in three.
Â
After leading the Ivy League with a .402 average last year, earning the Blair Bat Award along with Rookie of the Year honors, Cox is batting a robust .467 in 12 games this year with nine walks (.556 OBP), which puts him among the top 15 nationally in both categories. He also has struck out just twice, making him the sixth-toughest player to strike out in Division I.
